Best way to launch an ebook

To be honest, I hate creating a thread about this but this forum's input will most likely be very valuable. I asked a question in another thread but it was during the night so there was only one answer, which was good but can be expanded on.

I have a question for anyone experienced with ebook products. I've been thinking about the best way to launch in the past couple of days and I'm hesitant. I don't think there can be a "wrong" way, but there certainly may be an optimal way.

I just branched into ebooks after doing other affiliate marketing for years.

I believe my first ebook is up there in terms of quality and credibility versus what is currently on the market for this niche. With the content, sales pitch and added bonuses (video course), combined with the fact that it has been proven to be foolproof, I believe the price point should be a minimum of $97.

Since it's my first ebook, I should have started with a lower pricepoint but what can I say, it's hard to "dumb down" something just to sell it cheaper. Since competitors are mostly in the $37 bracket though, I'm willing to go lower at first and "overdeliver" to establish credibility. This is just to give you more information, it doesn't affect the following question.

The problem is, I don't have a list for this subject since it's my first ebook. I don't think I can launch the website and earn tens of thousands in the first day like some people here manage to do.

As such, I was wondering if I should keep it on the shelf for 2-3 months as I build a list for this niche market and other forms of prelaunch marketing. If I should make one or two ebooks with smaller price points, closer to the competitors, and then try to lure these customers into buying the "top quality" $97 version.

Either that or launch it asap and have it grow over time (ie seo, affiliates etc) instead of trying to have a big launch. My fear with this second approach is that without a "successful" launch, the ebook may have lower "gravity" which I assume (but do not know for sure) is pretty bad for a higher priced item. I remember some guy on this forum being in top 3 of business products in Clickbank after the second day, which must bring a lot of good affiliates.

What do you guys think?

Here is the one answer to my question so far, copy-pasted from the other thread:

------

Robert,

IMHO I think you should take a look at the market and your competition and see what they are charging for an ebook like yours. If there is no-one else doing it, ask yourself why not? Perhaps market research has shown that there are no buyers. Let the market dictate your price.

That being said, I believe you should 'procrastinate later'. Get your product out there and then market the hell out of it, write articles about it, pay for a media release, blog, YouTube and Tweet about it. But don't waste time promoting yourself without a product to sell at the end of it.

Sure you can create a smaller 'report' - make it a freebie - to build your list. This will also show if you have a buying market. If you don't get takers for your free report, you won't have buyers @ $97.

Best of luck.

I think you are over thinking this a bit and should just get it out there right away.

Get the web page set up and start selling it. Promotion can follow.

Yes, don't over think it my friend. I would suggest you give away some quality info for free just so everyone can see that you give out great content for free. Then release you product to them at a even more reasonable price. Get your website up, drive traffic to it and keep tweaking until you have a very high converting sales page. All the best with your launch.

Hey Robert, you're in the same predicament I was in. Simply put, we basically need to just learn on the job! Get it out there and see what happens. The proven buyer's market is the WSO forum obviously for quick sales. Taking testimonials from there along with proof of purchasers, you can then take it over to Clickbank and do a major launch with a whole lot of affiliates on hand to help promote. I'm using the example of some people who've done this in the past. They usually do the first launch on the WSO forum and then do the major launch on Clickbank.
Then there's the option of using your material to build a list. The WSO forum though is the optimum place for getting quick sales and testimonials.

I think you should call it a guide, digital download..etc...Anything but saying you are charging 97 bucks for an "e-book."

You don't need a list to launch..Create your site, create a squeeze, setup your Aweber account, create tons of back links, article market, social media, bookmarks, etc etc...Generate your own traffic in the mean time...It's very doable. You are on the right track just keep pushing...

You took action and created a product, that is an accomplishment right there, your next one should be the first sale...Now go get it!

Congrats and good luck with your new product

Suggest you do two things right now...

      1. Put together a giveaway (report, video, e-course, interview, checklist, etc...) that will act as your giveaway - incentive to begin your list building campaign. Look, you'll want this eventually anyway, I would get rolling on it now.

      2. Work on your sales page and funnel some initial traffic to go through the inevitable tweaking to improve your conversion for your actual product. I also recommend you work hard on the naming - the title and on positioning it as something other than an e-book for higher value. I have package ebooks as Guidebooks, Manuals, Courses, Home-Study Courses, Systems....

Getting your "squeeze" page - a 1-page sales letter for your giveaway designed to "squeeze" your prospect through your opt-in system prior to sending them to your product can be - in fact - part of your launch campaign.

I would plan to have a few of these "squeezes" that help build momentum for your ultimate launch while quietly testing your final sales page in the background. Typically I would do this with Adwords Traffic, some initial traffic from article writing, an existing list (if you have one) or an early JV or two where you give higher commissions to have them send you early traffic.

Obviously the quickest way to launch is to leverage other people's lists.

You can see how I do that here

You do have to know your conversion rates before you approach any good JV partners though.

Very true Roy, but there is certainly some work to do before you can leverage those lists.

Testing to make sure your infoproduct topic, title and positioning is a winner.

Making sure your lead capture system is up, working and converts - otherwise you get a partner to send you a mass of traffic and they come and go without you adding them to your list

Testing and improving your sales letter to make sure it has a decent conversion

Creating turn-key tools for your affiliates to use, this makes a HUGE difference in their liklihood of promotion. If you have valuable freebies they can send traffic to that "cookies" their traffic for future commmissions then that works best. Alternatively, having promotional tools ready such as blog posts, email blasts, graphics for blogs, etc...all will make a big difference.

With concerted effort, this can be done in a 2-3 week timeframe, but may well take someone part-time 5-6 weeks to prepare...yet it is well worth the effort as this 5-6 weeks can make a massive difference in the next 12-months (and beyond) in their business.

Thanks for the comments and suggestions.

I will definitively try to aim for the "course" or "manual" approach. I know of one website who sells an online course on this subject for almost 300$. No clue if his course sells but it should be a lot easier for me to sell my course's value compared to theirs, as opposed to try and explain why "just another ebook" is 60$ over the competition's.

I've coproduced this guide with people who are doing it, with 3rd party verification, so the testimonials are rock solid.

So again, thanks for the suggestions.

I will try to find a new name to reflect that it's an online course. This sparks another question though. Should I make it less gimmicky and more "professional"?

By which I mean.. ebooks often have catchy but silly names and themes (ie millionaire janitor). Should a course go for the readers rationale or stay with the tried and true emotional factor?

Robert naming is absolutely CRITCAL to the success of your product.

Your product name needs to: Convey the single biggest benefit that someone will get from using your product - which of course, ties back to what is the single biggest frustration, challenge or desire they have for looking for a solution in the first place? In addition, the benefit in your title should be as specific and measurable/verifiable as possible

Ex. Belly Fat Cure (taken by the way) is much better than Belly Fat Remover whichi s much better than Fat Remover which is better than Lose Weight Fast...

Here is a great workshop by Tim Ferris (author of the 4-Hour Work Week) that covers (in one section) coming up with a name for your product/title for your book - have to admit, 4-hour Work Week was a brilliant title!

  • You are over thinking. Get the product out in front of the audience before someone else beats you to the punch with their own product.

I also suggest getting in front of a bigger audience by becoming a JV contributor by offering a free product to build your list in this niche. You can even use this product as the upsell.
