Does having your photo increase conversions?

Some say you should put your photo on your site or sales page as this increases trust among potential buyers.

Anyone find this makes any difference?

The standard answer is "split test on your own site with your own traffic" but I think as long as you're not particularly shady looking it wouldn't hurt conversions

Just don't use a stock photo

I agree 100%. I have seen the use of stock photos recommended elsewhere but people will see them as that.

If you are happy put a photo of yourself on your website, do it. If not, don't.

Yes, having your photo does increase sales. Talking from experience. It sort of increases the trust your site visitors have about you.

When they look at your pic and read your sales page, they get drawn to you and to your words. And they would want to believe you.

No one can say as people are not the same, niches are not the same and the photo you will put is also not the same. So split test for two different sites or you have only one just put the photo for two weeks or so and see what happens

I agree that you need to split test. It all depends. I know people that swear by using a picture or video on their pages, and others that see better results without. There's no right answer until you try it out for yourself.

While this thread isn't a contest, I'm making it one: This is the best answer.

There are an infinite number of reasons why someone may or may not like someone else based on their photo. Taking individual results of using your personal photo and extrapolating it to tell other people whether they will increase their results using THEIR photo doesn't compute.

      Test. Test. Test.

Unless you have an eye in the middle of your forehead like Cyclops, or are otherwise absolutely hideous, most people could care less what you look like. Just display a halfway decent photo of yourself, and don't worry about it. Heck, it's not like you're trying to get a date on Match.com!

That being said, if you're not comfortable with the way you look, don't use a photo.

Depends on a niche, but most of the times it does increase trust, and conversions too. It does not have to be YOU in the picture though

I think yes particularly for forums and personal sites but I haven't tested this on the warrior forum because the traffic is to low for a accurate test.

  • I tested this on a recent Internet Marketing product, and found very little different. The version with my photo converted slightly less (something like 0.2% less) than the version without my photo. However, that is not statistically significant, so the result may just have arisen by chance.

It may be that internet marketers are more sophisticated, it may be that this depends on the photo chosen, or it may be just be due to other factors.

One benefit of using a photo, which hasn't been mentioned, is to build longer term trust in your business and your brand. That can more than outweigh slight difference in sales for a single product.

I have both, photo and no photo

I have both video and no video

The video ones do sell less...

    The photo about even

My view when I buy something,

First I'm looking for that item. I'm only buying things I'm looking for.
I find several items that meet my needs, then i email each one if I get no
answer I don't buy that one. It should be within 24 to 48 hours.

Videos don't have time to watch, so they are no good to me.
Graphs and sales charts no good either to me.

If you don't sign your page I pass it up. I need to have a name and email.
that is more important than photo or video or sale stats.

Benefits and Features spend more time on these.

If it fits my Benefits and Features I need you sign your page and respond to my emails timely then I buy from you.

Testimonials do nothing for me either.

    Hope that helps

Forget about split-testing! Some things simply don't require testing. Here's why: There is a tremendous amount of distrust and skepticism about IM. And with so many scams and fly-by-night outfits operating online, can you really blame people for being distrustful and/or skeptical? Therefore, anything you can do to reassure potential customers that you're a real, live person, and not some individual attempting to do business anonymously will do nothing but raise the trust factor of your website.

Now think about it. Is reassuring potential customers something you really need to test?

Just don't put a picture of yourself with some Farrari and a big cheesy smile. There is no greater turnoff to me than a pitch page that shows some douchebag showing off in front of a car that probably isn't his to begin with.

On the other hand, don't add a photo of yourself in a crappy 1979 Volkswagen either.

I would suggest adding a pic of yourself eating a peanut butter sandwich. Everybody likes peanut butter sandwiches.

One of the main elements to close the deal is trust. You need to gain the trust somewhere in the funnel.

        Trust grows as:

        professional looking site -> + picture -> + video

if that is the first contact with the client. Of course depending one what you put there...

but you can gain the trust somewhere else (a video or conference), then you don't need anything there.

Obviously, you need to split test any ad copy to see if a photo makes a difference. And then if it does, you can test your photo against a model's photo to see what works better.

Part of the value of the photo is going to be if you are selling yourself. Then it helps to make a bond with the visitor/buyer.

A while back Bob Bly (Copywriter - Bob Bly - Copywriting Services) wrote a piece on his tests with and without a photo and because he is selling himself, he found that the photo helped his conversions. On his main website, his photo is just in the bio now (looks like he recently edited the home page) but it is front and center on all his sales pages.
