Question for Internet Oldtimers about Midi Music and Public Domain, etc.

I want to do some work with midi files and some public domain stuff. There are still lots of midi files on the net, but not the selection there used to be.

What has happened to the .midi format? Midi files work well in Garage Band and I've just spent hours looking for some old favorites. There used to be some excellent sequencers out there, for example, Don Carrol, but his sites have vanished, and apparently he has too.

Also, I never see any copyright notices on most midi files, but most are on sites to be freely downloaded.

Can some one bring me up to date on the midi music scene and possible point me to some alternatives?

Does anyone even know what I'm talking about?

This is pretty much it. Basically, because MIDI is something that's largely limited to musicians and producers these days - people with studios - the supply of free and low-cost MIDI has just about dried up. The general consensus seems to be that if you know what it is and have the gear to use it, you can pay for it. A lot.

I used to have some really awesome MOD and S3M files, but good luck finding those now, too.
