Do you want people to know you have money?

When you market "how to make money" stuff do you feel the need to impress people with your wealth?

It's always a mixed message in my mind when I see a 1974 Pinto, rusted, fenders falling off, and a sign in the window "Make Millions in Real Estate, call 888 555 1212 "

Part of the marketing, in my opinion, is the look of success. The same sign on a new Bentley would get my attention.

That said people with true wealth don't need to impress anyone. People such as Warren Buffett can drive an old car and get away with it. He is not however selling success to others.

A car is only one example. Your house, your clothes, all could come into play. Someone like Frank Kern can dress down, drive a VW bus and be fine because he is selling the lifestyle. Even he however breaks out the BMW at times.

Thoughts?

If you are selling "how to get rich" you need to demonstrate your wealth as that helps build your credibility.

Any other niche and you're just a show off.

Scott, that reminds me of a fellow I ran into on a cruise ship in Hawaii a few years ago. We were standing on the deck, watching the waves go by and shooting the breeze. He mentioned that he and his wife were in Hawaii to buy a new condo, and that they were celebrating the purchase with a cruise around the islands.

I asked him which unit he bought - sea view or city view. He looked at me kind of funny and said, "all of them"...

From his dress and demeanor, no one would have ever guessed.

As for me, I'll take 'rich' and you can keep 'famous'.

Does anyone remember the old Tom Vu commercials? Him on a big yacht surrounded by ladies? lol

I think that showing wealthy does lend credibility, but overdoing it just comes off as cheesy. It looks bad if you are claiming you make XX,XXX a month and a video of you shows an empty and desolate office behind you (someone I know and don't like did that and I knew he was lying!)

I am supposed to do a press release for a guy that I know well. He has the standard "I did this and made this" page, but here is the rub, he actually did. However, if I found his page I wouldn't believe it no matter what anyone said, because everyone else says the same and I know half of them are in sheltered accommodation LOL!

So I see a very strong argument for keeping quite about how much you make, as it sets the BS bells going with me, and probably others.

For me of course this is never an issue, as I am married. Regardless of how much I make I will always be poor and scrapping to get by, because as is her job, the wife nicks it all. ;o)

It's not my wealth that they're after it is a symbolization of wealth that they desire if wealth is on the mind. Mostly people just are looking for a way to success and want some reassurance that they have what it takes to achieve it in hopes of having that little bit extra kick in the butt to get things done.
