A True Internet Marketing Story of Inspiration

The following is a true story...

Shelley Lowery is an Internet Marketing legend. But long before she became President of Brajusta Publishing, Inc., and owner of Web-Source.net, Shelley worked in a steel plant on a steel rolling mill.

She was single with children, so she needed the above average income that this dangerous, blue-collar position provided. Anyway, after being with this company for ten years, one day, while loading a 3,000 lb. coil of steel onto a machine, the brake on the crane malfunctioned. The coil struck Shelley in the shoulder, and dislocated it backwards. After two surgeries, and months of rehabilitation, the doctors determined that her shoulder was beyond repair. And told her she could never go back to her old job at the steel plant.

Shelley was out of work for over a year. She lost her house, and her car. That's when Shelley's life changed dramatically.

Although the doctors told her she would never again have a functional shoulder. Shelley refused to accept that, and she was determined to prove the doctors wrong. It was a long and difficult physical and mental struggle. But little by little, she eventually regained the use of her shoulder. She then took a temporary job cleaning houses, and scraped enough money together to buy her first computer.

And the rest, as they say, is history.

I hope Shelley's story inspires many of you to continue on your Internet Marketing journey, even when the journey seems daunting. Because as Shelley Lowery has shown us, nothing can stand in your way, if you refuse to let it!

That is a very inspiring story indeed! That was very brave of Shelley to go all out and scraping enough money to buy her first computer.
I mean, if that wouldn´t have worked out for her she could have lost everything.

But thank you, this shows me that it is worth to put the efford into it.

And I hope Shelley`s shoulder is better now.

Sometimes I think people get too comfortable and think of their Internet Business as a hobby and not a "Dire Need".
The truth of the matter is for most people success is not dire in their minds. They don't feel that sense of urgency that they should.

This ONE of two reasons MOST people achieve success...

ONE: is through desperation, they take bold, obsessed action and never quit.

TWO is through inspiration, they take bold, obsessed action and never quit.

      Inspiration or desperation.

However, the problem is most are too lazy... not determined enough... not serious... too complacent... have too many excuses... blame everyone but themselves and never put the responsibility to succeed on their own shoulders... and I could go on forever.

The comment about "Didnt she get workers comp... or a law suit" is what's currently wrong with the USA IMO. Shouldnt some one else take care of us? Shouldnt someone else do it for us? No offense homeless guy, but that comment shook me out of my computer chair.

Change that thought process in people, and you can change their bank accounts.

Not that you were or have that thought process or attitude, but even your screen name says so. I dont know you at all, and it's a viable thought, but considering the tone of the thread, just got under my skin. I'm cool now. carry on and I apologize ahead of time for being offensive, tis not my nature.

What is there to be suspicious of? This thread isn't soliciting anything? Besides, Shelley Lowery didn't post it, I did. Anyway, what possible motive would I have to post a fake hardship story about Shelley Lowery? Admittedly, there are a lot of things to be suspicious about when it comes to IM. Fortunately, inspiring stories like this one isn't one of them.

Hi David, thanks for posting this very inspirational story.

I've been learning about internet marketing for the past 18 months or so and have had medical issues myself with a spinal injury. In fact out of the 18 months learning i have spent nearly 8 months on bed rest. I've got to go back into hospital in 6 weeks time for another operation, which will have me laid up again for a couple more weeks.

But like Shelley I will keep going, i just hope that my success isn't as much of an up hill struggle, but only time will tell.

I view life and its problems like an athletic track of hurdles, (with problems becoming hurdles), when faced with them you have 4 choices: Get over it, Get around it, Crash straight through it or stay where you are.

Personaly I try and get over it or get around it. Crashing through it can lead to disaster and staying where you are is not an option in my book, as it means you're beat.

Thanks again David, its good to see success after such pain.

      Hi Barry:

Wow...that's quite a touching story! First of all, let me say, I'll keep you and your family in my prayers. It sounds like you've had to endure quite a lot already, both mentally and physically. And apparently, you still have to endure a lot more.

Allow me to make a suggestion: When you return to the hospital in 6 weeks, take along a book titled, A Daily Dose of the American Dream: Stories of...A Daily Dose of the American Dream: Stories of... by Alan C. Elliott. It features some amazingly inspirational stories about people like Oprah Winfrey, Warren Buffett, Irving Berlin, Martin Luther King, Jr., Steven Spielberg, Bill Gates, Thomas Edison, Wilma Rudolph and many others. In total, it's a collection of 366 inspirational five-minute readings - one for each day of the year.

Again, I'll keep you in my prayers, and I wish you and your family nothing but the best!

The problem is, here is a blurb from a article written about Shelley Lowery that I referred to in a earlier post...

        3. Shelley Lowery: Before launching her Internet career, Shelley Lowery was employed by Worthington Industries, a Fortune 500 company, where she was a "Production Scheduling Coordinator." That's where she discovered her true passion for business and computers.

She quit her job in 1995, after ten years of employment, to pursue her dreams and launch her full time Internet business. She has been through all of the trials and errors of web design and development, Internet marketing and promotion, writing a weekly publication and running a full time Internet business and now shares her experience with her visitors.

Shelley's articles have appeared in hundreds of electronic and print publications including Microsoft Direct Access, Internet Magazine, SiteProNews, Jayde WebProNews, Active Internet Marketer and many more.

Web-Source.net is owned and maintained by Shelley Lowery, President of Brajusta Publishing, Inc., a direct marketing company located in Lewis Center, Ohio, specializing in providing instructional electronic books, software and publications.
This article has her working for Worthington Industries, which is involved in processed steel products, pressure cylinders and metal framing.

She was a "Production Scheduling Coordinator" working with senior management according to another article source: Shelley - Blog Toplist - you'll have to scroll down.

And, that's where she discovered her true passion for business and computer. According to these two articles, she quit that job after 10 years to launch her full time IM business.

Both of these stories can't be true?

One says she quit her job and started her IM business.

The OP's version asserts that she lost her job due to an injury while working a menial blue collar job. Then further fell on harder times and at some point at her worst moment bought her first computer and then the rest is history.

Don't know where the OP got his info from but in the words of Comedian Robert Wuhl, "When the Legend Becomes Fact, Print the Legend."

Is that what's going on here?

Is that were you got your story? Directly from Shelley?

With the numerous contradictions between your account and the account that is easily available on the net, something smells really really fishy.

Add to the fact that you continue adding these repetitive "Thank you" type posts, it seems highly unlikely that the story is true.

When a person makes statements on a public forum, it's always a great idea to be able to back up said statements/stories with proof.

To tell a person who asks where you got your info from because they found a contradiction in your story - to go talk to Shelly for yourself is quite evasive.

If the account that you told is true, anyone should be able to confirm the veracity of your story without ever contacting Shelley.

It boils down to the Reagan Rule; Trust But Verify!

Actually, bizfox someone else pointed it out but it did seem suspicious to me after they made the statement. I checked and even after scouring the web, nothing similar to the OPs story surfaced.

As stated previously, the story posted online totally contradicts his story.

Maybe that's why he started it off with, "This is a True Story"

He quickly posted an email claiming that he received directly from Shelley purportedly confirming the veracity his story...

            I'm not buying it.

I've been down that road before with other individuals and excepted that move, that's why I asked for the sources directly.

            Still haven't gotten them.

The word for the day is credibility. If you're going to post a thread in an public forum be prepared to be scrutinized. If, not, you lose all credibility.

Why not just post the links where you got the story from?

Surely, you got it from somewhere? Right?

    How hard is that?

And why is the easily available story about Shelley path to IM in direct contradiction to your story. Same company. Same time frame. Same woman. Totally different story?

If it is a true story, I have website that tells inspiring stories and one of my editors would love to take the story and run with it.

    If it's true...

As a matter of fact, the below email was sent right after you posted the email you said you received from Shelley.

We are currently considering posting a story about you on a online magazine. The story was first posted on the Warrior Forum stating how you got hurt on the job and subsequently lost your job, house and car, after being told that you would be physically incapacitated. The story goes on to say that you took a job cleaning houses to make ends meet and subsequently had to scape money together just to buy your first ever computer. Then you started your online business with no experience and the rest his history. Is that a correct picture? And, would you care to add anything?
As of this moment, we have yet to receive a response; unlike you who conveniently received a response directly from Shelley almost immediately.

If what you wrote is true, bravo!

But, as the other individual pointed out, seems real fishy. BUT, it's not the first time something like this has happened on the WF.

Now, instead of providing a link to Shelley's tech support and suggesting that we contact her, how about just providing the links - issue solved.

      Giles,
I'm with you on making sure anyone that makes a post is on the up and up and not trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes in order to make a buck but why not give David a bit of slack.

He was only posting this to help lift the spirits of those folks that are feeling down and ready to quit before they really achieve any success. lord knows there are plenty of those posts in the forum right now.

I have no doubt he had no malicious intentions behind his post (mind you I'm not agreeing that it's not true).

If he was guilty of anything it would probably be of posting this in the wrong section of the forum as it probably should have gone into the "Success, Power, Self Improvement" section and he probably should have started his post with the following "This is based on a true story".

Heck brother, even Will Smith's inspirational movie about Chris Gardiner "Pursuit of Happiness" and Kurt Russell's movie about the U.S. Hockey team "Miracle" added some sensationalism in it so that as an audience we would leave the movie theater feeling inspired and feeling like we could do anything we set our minds to.

The folks that actually need to be outed are the people with claims of making thousands upon thousands overnight and posting garbage like that in their WSO titles or using hype and BS as part of their salesletter.

Yeah Tim but that's how they usually start...

The people who hawk those worthless WSOs started somewhere.

They get their post count up and some thanks and then BAM!

At any rate this wasn't about outing anyone.

A previous commenter noted that he couldn't find the story and thought it was suspicious?

I simply concurred after checking myself.

I didn't mention that I went to ALL of Shelley's websites and read ALL of her "About Me" pages and NONE of them have anything remotely close to the OPs story.

Shelley tells her story about getting into IM and it is nothing remotely close to the OPs story.

As far as being malicious... who knows what his game plan was/is.

He has yet to provide proof...

If the story he crafted is/was true, it would easily verifiable, Yes?

        What's so hard about that?

What type of people go around setting about to inspire others with false information?

        /*Rhetorical question...

Acknowledged....I see where you are coming from and the forum is lucky to have folks that are willing to do some detective work every now and then.

I also ran the same due diligence test that you did but that was merely to read up more about her as I had a few minutes to relax and felt like learning more about how she got started.

From reading her BIO, her's is a relatively common IM story. She quit her job to follow her IM dream and made a success of it.

The funny/sad thing is why go through all of the trouble of posting such a heart wrenching story knowing some people may just confirm it.

When I first got into IM, a IMer that I had recently met through a client gave me this spiel about how had had a special connection with a programmer of a software application that could easily build websites with a few clicks, no HTML needed.

Being that I didn't know HTML at the time, it seemed like the perfection solution.

He said the software sold for around $2500.00.

BUT, he would talk to the programmer on my behalf to see if he could negotiate a discount.

The story he told me about that programmer could make you wanna cry.

            But I digress...

Fast forward after about three days of suspense.

The IMer came back with a $550.00 price tag and we needed two units.

He ingeniously tried to hide the name of the software while we viewed his computer screen but one of my business partners caught the name anyway.

My business partner left his office that evening, raced home and immediately performed an online search. Turns out the product was the KSEO Website Builder, which at the time sold for $49.00!

He was an affiliate plus he was scheming to charge us $1000.00 over and above the actual cost as if we were not going to perform our due diligence.

Imagine the look on his face when we told he we found the software at $49.00.

The moral of the story is: Trust But Verify!

For what it's worth, if it's true, yes, this is a pretty inspiring story.

But I hate it when people say "the rest is history" and miss out the actual important part.

I was reading some spiel on another marketers "about me" page the other day and they went on and on about "how they got big in IM"... only when they got to the part that they discovered Internet marketing, they said "and the rest is hisory"!!

I'm sure it wasn't all roses once she bought that computer...

First of all, I would like to thank David for posting my story. I think that was very kind of him to try to help others. And, although I can understand why people may be suspicious, I can tell you, the story is completely true. I believe the confusion may have been caused by my 'about' page, which stated that I worked at Worthington Industries as a Production Scheduling Coordinator and quite my job to pursue my Internet business.

This is also true. The accident happened at Worthington Industries, which is a steel processing plant. At the time of the accident, I worked out in the plant. However, during rehab, the company demanded that I try to come back to work in the office. They gave me a temporary job entering data - one-handed (Production Scheduling Coordinator). I loved working on the computer and spent my lunch breaks learning everything I could. And yes, that is where I discovered how much I loved business and the computer.

However, after I received a partial disability rating of 35%, and the doctors told them I would never be able to go back to my job in the plant, they basically gave me a choice - I could quit or be 'laid off.' So, I quit. I didn't have a choice. That's when I took a job cleaning houses.

As for receiving disability, the company was self-insured and paid me a portion of my regular paycheck. That was it.

As for suing them, although I did consider it, as I had a previous injury to my shoulder (not the same type, but...) I just didn't feel right about it.

I hope this will clear things up for everyone.

Take care and I wish you all the best of success!

      Hi Shelley,

It's good to see you here. Your story is really inspiring. And as David said, you don't have much knowledge when it comes to computers and had no idea how to start. I do believe in that, because I saw your post count it's only 3 but you are a member since 2005, it seems that you are not here most of the time, and also your sig links are not clickable, maybe David will be teaching you how to do that.

Anyway, despite of all the adversities you've been through, I really salute you for your perseverance and determination. I really can't imagine if it happened to me. i can't imagine if I can still continue my IM business after all those painful experiences. But you were able to pull it off and became a success.

      Kind regards,

      Gary

Very inspiring story. It can relate to the famous quotes try and try until you succeed. And after reading it feels like an adrenalin to me that I need to take care of myself and work harder.

Andrei, I don't consider anyone a guru. Because I don't place anyone on a pedestal. That being said, Shelley Lowery is as much an IM superstar as anyone in the business. Her web-source.net website is not only one of the most poular IM sites on the web, it's also an amazing resource of quality website design and IM information. I highly recommend it.
