Is Ezine really that competitive?

I'm thinking about making my own ebook, and promoting it through ezine. The pet niche wasn't bringing in the type of traffic I was looking for (150 visitors in half a month, pathetic), so I want to try a more popular niche; health.

People always recommend don't go for the popular niches, but why would this matter on Ezine? I can understand why it's silly to try to rank for the keyword "golf clubs" on google. You'd have no chance. But wouldn't it not matter if you are writing articles on ezine?

You'll get your initial huge rush before your article gets buried, right?

Or am I totally wrong on this?

Competition in the health Niche is huge, you will be lucky if your articles stay in the recently submitted list more than 30 minutes. IF you are seriously considering flooding EZA with articles every half an hour all day, then you are going to need to outsource a lot of your article work since you will get burnt out very quickly.

I would also advise that you send your readers to a squeeze page so you can capture their email address and build a relationship with them first, sending them straight to a sales page will result in less conversions.

Here is a catch-22 situation for you.

If you go into competitive niches then - well - people are competing by the very definition of competitive niches. How long do you think your EZA will stay up?

If you are going for niches that are not too competitive, then your EZA articles would stay up longer. But, would you have enough visitors? What triggers competition in the first place?

So clearly, you need to do a few things right.

      1. Catch your visitor's email address and opt-in to receive communications from you. That way, you can sell and upsell for long. I know many people use EZA simply to build lists than to promote offers, and it makes a huge sense.

      2. Do enough SEO on your articles that are in hot enough niches but you can reach the first page of Google. That way, you shall receive continuous traffic after your initial capital investment. The initial capital will certainly consist of time (it takes time to do fruitful SEO) and possibly money (if you decide to outsource some of your SEO efforts).

Take the above steps, and there ought to be no looking back.

SEO has never been my strong point. It's been a year, and I still have no idea what I'm doing.

Three articles a day however, is easily possible for me, I did it for half a month before (hence my opening post), and I'm ready to do it again.

I guess what I'm saying is, I don't care much about SEO. My question is, you say that if I choose a competitive niche, that my articles will only be seen for 30 minutes.

Would 30 minutes in health get me more views than the 4 hours I might get from my pet niche? Looking at my crappy visitor stats, I think so.

    But what do you think?

Very possible and the reality is if you submit a ton of articles over time you will generate traffic no matter how competitive the niche. There is no denying that no matter what anyone tries to tell you.

Some of the top authors have 3000 to 4000 articles in the dating category all leading back to the same squeeze page so just imagine if their articles only provided 1 new subscriber a day per each article.

Now you are talking about 3000 - 4000 new subscribers a day..............yes those numbers are insane but that is the power of having several thousand articles working on your behalf in any niche.

    Respectfully,

I did a test since I seem to get opposing answers here.

A week after submitting an article, it got 5 views, with a 40% click through rate (2 click throughs).

So I guess you guys were right, it's pointless to try to compete.

Then how are these other weight loss article writers getting hundreds of organic ezine views on their articles before they get buried while I was only able to get 5?

I haven't read your articles BUT I know that I have always considered myself a pretty decent writer. Many of my articles from a year ago traffic like that. I would get a handful of views and an even lower click through rate than what you state.

Just like anything that you wish to become successful with you should look for ways to improve. I know that TimG had a post not too long ago that should be give you some ideas for how you can improve your views and click throughs.

It is not pointless to try to compete. If you quit before you really begin then you are really done and I don't want to see you quit. You can improve both your quantity and quality of article that leads to more views AND more click throughs.

Keyword density (so your article gets picked up by search engines more readily), keyword research not just for numbers but maybe keywords that you never even thought about related to your niche, titles that make someone want to read your article to solve their problem and understanding how to lay out your article so it flows into your resource box that includes a powerful call to action....something that says "Click here and make the pain go away right now!"..."relief is only a click away".

I made some simple changes to how I write, even though I thought I was a pretty good writer, and I doubled my click through and my views have improved dramatically. I blame it all on Tim and info from others here on the WF.

Don't be afraid of competition and just do it. Say nay to the naysayers who say that you can't compete in a certain niche because it's too competitive. Who knows...they might be your competition!

I've heard this song, all too often...IM'ers blaming the niche. The problem isn't the niche. The problem is your article marketing execution - or lack of. And until you take responsibility for that fact, you're going to continue jumping from niche to niche, trying to catch lightning in a bottle.

My advice: Get to the root of the problem. Find out why you failed in the pet niche. Start studying article marketing fundamentals, and get some answers. Because you're obviously doing something wrong. And then come back with a different approach.

Well, I released my article and received 3 views.

Then over the week, I received 2 more views.

I'm going to have to say that my article will probably not be read again.

I mean, I know that I have to write many articles; I was thinking about 3 a day for half a year...

But if they just get 5 views each, it's pointless. The funny thing is, you are right, I have to blame myself....

Unless you test like I tested, which was, I copied the exact same strategy as another popular ezine author in the same niche that makes over $100,000 a year. I literally copied her paragraph and selling strategy, but just wrote my own words.

5 views. So yeah... I think it's the niche, not me.

Don't get discouraged, and don't fear competition. Just remember, wherever there is competition, there is money to be made. It's competitive for a reason, but that should not steer you away from giving up in that niche.

It sounds like this is all new to you, Article Marketing. Whenever starting something new, always expect to fail first, than learn from your mistakes and eventually you will see success. Brian Tracy asked a table full of multi millionaires how many times did they fail before they succeeded, and the answer was around 12-15 times, before they saw any success.

Now my suggestion would be to audit your article headlines, make sure they are grabbing the attention of your reader. For example "Discover 5 Secrets On How To Train Your Dog To Catch Anything"

Go over the articles you have written, make sure they are interested in the Headline, and in your first paragraph. Also some of the members on this post have given great tips, such as send your readers to a squeeze page, get their email info's get them opted-in than start upselling them. Many of the top Guru's use Article Marketing as their first source for building massive amounts of traffic and links to their websites, so trust me this type of marketing does work whether your in a micro niche, or a large competitive niche.

I don't stress about how many views my articles on Ezine Articles get in a week. I have articles that have been there for years that still get traffic and send traffic to my site. A week is nothing. Give your articles more time to get indexed and ranked.

Pick good keywords and make your resource box links relevant to the article. Keep at it and some of your articles will do much better than what you're seeing right now.

Hey, just a thought. I have a few niche sites in the dog care niche and I get a lot of traffic. I thought any type of pet care was popular. Maybe you should examine your articles, your site, etc. I'm not sure but it could be something simple. It's best to tweak it and get it right rather than just try to find another niche. I think virtually any niche can make you money if you find a group of people who want what you're selling.

Good advice above about the importance of keyword research and about creating a compelling headline that makes people click.

There's more that you can do though:

    1) consider getting a premium account if you're really serious. It's $97/month, which is a lot, but for 3 months, it's "only" $194, which comes to less than $63/month.

Why is that good? You can schedule the release of your articles for times like evenings and Friday evening, and that will much increase your chances of having your articles in the "new articles" page for a LOT longer.

Coupled with really hot titles, this can increase your views a LOT.

    2) Promote your articles. Tell your twitter friends about it. Blog about them. Tell your list about them. All these things bring up your numbers and will help you get catapulted into the "most read" category, which will REALLY increase your views.

    3) Make sure your article flows right into your resource box and offer something very desirable for free in exchange for their sign-up.

    Hope this helps. Good luck!
