  By default they are set as nofollow, but there are plugins around were you can remove that!
  
  Having comments on your blog is a good way to continue the discussion in which you started talking about in the post. Amoung other things, it does add to the post and search engines will love the content some people can provide.
  
  Over on my blog, I have them enabled. (And if you're worried about SPAM, just activate the Akismet plugin!)

If you delete them then you're deleting content
to your site that the search engines would mostly
like.

That's content that came without you doing anything.

When you delete replies to posts that's also a great way
to basically tell people that you don't want them to come
back.

I manually approve all the links on my blog and generally approve all the genuine ones. The spam comments automatically get caught by Akismet.

Luckily for me financial blogs don't attract a lot of comments so it's not too much hassle.

I've seen instances where certain comments will add to the context of a post to the point where the post and the comment combined caused a substantial jump in serp's. But not often.

However good quality comments will add substantial content to your blog and worth allowing.

Just make sure to have a good spam filter installed.

Personally I would filter pingbacks as well.

Haven't seen much use in those besides the usual "read the rest of this post here" BS.

I think it's fun to allow comments

I enjoy interacting with readers. I don't always LIKE the comments, but that's a risk I'm willing to take. I am also a fan of DO follow so that people will stop by and comment often. It's a great way to develop loyal readers for several reasons.

I agree with you Jenn

I am willing to take the risk. I was just not sure what other people do.

I have one blog in a healthy food niche with a growing community that I am happy to allow a free for all on.

For my IM blog I was not so sure.

So Askimet activated, Spam filters on and I will allow comments.

Now what was all that about DO Follow? There is always something I do not know!

I allow comments that are on topic. The ones I've been getting lately that I'm not quite sure what to do: they start off on topic, then end up telling me a joke or something (nothing rude, just not related). Haven't decided what to do in those cases yet.

Blogs are considered "authority" sites. The more people who comment (assuming you're driving traffic to them) the more people will want to learn from them. You're creating an interactive community, AKA, Web 2.0 environment. That's a great way to drive more traffic to your "monry" site...

But only if the comments are related to what
you've posted, yes? Or am I missing something?

In some of my blogs almost 90% of the comments
are spam for porn or pharmaceuticals, etc.

I'm going to have to get Askimet.

I approve all my comments manually, plus i also require you to sign up to my blog first as a subscriber before you can leave any comments.

A good way to build your list, and deter spam comments. If a subscriber is constantly giving good postings and comments then i upgrade them removing some of the restrictions a subscriber has.

Not allowing them would kill your blog in my opinion. Not only does my web marketing blog allow comments, but they are also DoFollow, so that if they are good comments than those commentators will get a reward

Blog is Web 2.0. And Web 2.0 is all about collaboration & user participation. By not allowing comments, your site will lose it's stickiness. People who come to your site look for solution to a problem, and once they found it on your site, they might want to ask questions.

Just my 2 cents.

I allow them, and have removed the "dofollow" tag. However I also have a plugin that automatically denies any comment with 2 or more links in it, and I still manually approve comments (so junk and most pingbacks on junk sites get deleted).

I don't get many comments, so the manually approve bit is fine and doesn't take much time - once I start getting more I'll probably look at other options.

I approve of comments if they add real value to the blog. The poster's point should provide information of value to the blog for future readers. No value = no post.
