What shopping cart to use for very large store?

I am launching a very large ecommerce site and I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what shopping cart would be best. I have looked at alot of options but it's hard to tell what would hold up under the strain of more than 500,000 products with moderate number of visitors.

What do the rest of you guys use for large stores?

Any recommendations would be great.

I'm sorry I can't answer your question about which shopping cart is best, but I can tell you as an ecommerce site owner with close to 3,000 products, having a site that would allow customers to simply purchase from a choice of up to 500,000 products at the touch of a button will be a logistical nightmare.

Your cart will have to automatically update the inventory levels or your customer service and chargebacks will kill you. You can't expect people to be happy when they buy a product that is not in stock and can't be shipped yet a charge shows up on their card.

Please don't take this the wrong way but if you really need to ask the question it appears you haven't really thought this plan through. I only say that because the shopping cart part of the equation is a small part of the total integration that is needed to support that many products.

    Best of luck, anyway.

      Bill,

Thanks for your reply. Actually I am not planning to sell any items that are not in stock. All are in stock. I totally agree with you that selling items that are not in stock would be a nightmare. That is why I am looking for a system in which the stock information could be updated everyday. I am fully integrated with my warehouses so I can ship 100 or 1000 orders a day easily, perhaps even more. Some days I ship 250 orders now.

If you look at popular commerce sites on the internet you find that many have more than 100,000 items, even if their specialized such as jewelry or car parts. By the way all the products are from a certain industry, I sell most of the products in my industry.

I think you are right that logistically it may be hard but I will try to automate most things, except customer service of course.
