    This type of thing always sounds good in theory.

    However, my concern is my site getting linked to say a 'banned' google site. And therefore this reflects on my site.

    Am I right in thinking that this would be an issue?

Think out of the box ways to reach out to the masses when you are thinking of the contest rules and requirements. If done right you will have lots of traffic, backlinks besides the main aim of promoting your blog or whatever you like to send the message out to the people.
