Blog Commenting w/ Royalty Free Music Example

I have found that blog commenting is way more useful than just for back-links.

In terms of reaching your target market it is safer than email and cheaper than pay per click.

The key is that your customer has to blog and you have a well defined clientele.

For instance I have a free royalty free music library and my customers are video and film makers.

To reach them by pay per click is impossible and expensive. To reach them by email is dangerous due to spam laws. To reach them via postcard is expensive and ineffective.

So I just google "film maker blog". I take a genuine interest in videos and movies anyway so I read the post and comment.

I see the click through in my referral stats almost immediately. So for me blogs are awesome and effective for direct marketing + the bonus of link building for seo!

I hope that helps since I see people here on WF on the fence about blog commenting.

  • Very true. Blog commenting's a big part of my own strategies, in particular for getting people to my own list, and for building my optin list.

Providing you put in appropriate and insightful comments (avoid anything that looks in the slightest bit spammy), you should be able to get a lot of traffic from commenting on the right blogs. This works just as well for niches as it does for personal blogs.

I had a double opt-in list for my site of many thousands and it started to get scary big.

I started to get complaints that people wanted off the list and they were pissed. They had to confirm their subscription twice and there was very, very clearly an unsubcribe link at the bottom of every email (I was using feedburner email delivery). So wtf!?

Catch is...I searched two of these folks and they were not even on my mailing list! Maybe they were getting my podcast or subscribed via rss to email...I have no idea. What a headache.

That's why I can't stand email marketing... there is always some kind of problem and the repercussions are really major if your ISP or host gets a spam complaint.

So my attitude now is that if you want to check out my latest songs then come to the site because you will not being hearing from me via email. Its too bad because 95% of the people on the list gave me great feedback. I just can't take the stress of the other 5%.
