Step By Step Guide to Making Money Online

This is a step-by-step method for creating a downloadable or information product.
  1. Research a niche you are interested in. Go to Wordtracker and see how many people are looking for your topic. Try several variations such as "fried chicken recipes", "fried chicken gravy recipes," or "boneless fried chicken recipes."
  2. Determine how many clicks you could realistically get per day. Use the Google Keyword Tool for this, though don't worry about their projected cost per click (CPC); it is almost always a gross overestimation.
  3. Sign up for an auto responder through Aweber. They have a money back guarantee, so if your test doesn't work, you don't pay.
  4. Create a simple three page website, using nvu.com or Dreamweaver.
    • The first page should be a sales page, which includes a product picture, headline, as many benefits your product provides as possible, a strong guarantee, a special bonus offer for buying today, and a call to action. Check out our sales letters chapter.
    • The second page is a summary of the offer, with a big button that says "Yes! I Want (Your Product)." Once a visitor clicks on that button, they can tentatively be called a sale.
    • The third page is a simple line saying "Sorry, our product is on backorder (or we are currently updating the product), please leave your name and email and we will let you know when it is ready." These people are definitely considered sales. When someone leaves their email address, it will be captured in your auto responder for follow up.
  5. Open a Google Analytics account and place tracking code on all three pages. This will allow you to track your visitors, and see how many of them click through to each page. Be sure to add the third page as a Goal in Analytics, and give it the value of your product, minus payment processing. Check the Analytics Help Guide to learn more.
  6. Create an Google AdWords campaign to drive traffic to your site.
  7. Run your campaign for at least a week in order to reduce noise and inconsistencies. For example, let's say you run a campaign for three days before Christmas; do you really think those numbers will remain the same year round?
  8. At the end of the week tally the results. Assuming you are selling a digital product (which all beginners should) you can compare how much you spent on advertising and how much revenue you would have made though your test sales. If you are planning on selling a hard good like speakers or clothes, you have to factor for production costs as well. Take a long hard look at these numbers and decide whether it would be worth it to proceed. Pause all campaigns at the end of the test.
  9. Roll up your sleeves and create your product. If it is information based, you will be able to charge more by adding highly detailed, original content in different forms of media. Be sure to include special bonus items too to increase the value. You can do this by searching cNet for free programs you can sell, or look into public domain material on your topic (you could also include another product you currently have, or create more content). The best way to search for public domain material is to use Creative Commons search (it's on the top right of you Firefox browser, as a drop down menu) or you can visit their website. Be sure to check the boxes that allow you to modify the material for commercial purposes.
  10. You have two options: the easy way, and the pro way. If you just want to get on with it, go ahead and launch your product. If you want to be a pro, set up a split test or Taguchi test for your sales page. Check out Kaizentrack or Google Optimizer. Now when you launch, you will be testing variables from day one.

Alternatively, you could set up a landing page that is designed to capture your prospects email address first, and then follow up for a sale. Generally, this is a great strategy, as it gives you a chance to stay in contact with the prospect, and recommend other products and/or services. Remember, you still have to provide value!

Either direction you choose, it is wise to begin split testing. If that is too time intensive initially, you can always split test your AdWords ads.

  11. Set up a checkout process with Paypal, and use e-junkie to deliver the digital goods (for only five bucks a month).
  12. After awhile, check your results in Google Analytics. Look at your Adwords campaign in Analytics, which gives two important metrics: cost per click (CPC) and return per click (RPC). This is a very simple way to see which keywords, ads and campaigns are making you money, and which ones aren't. Over time, keep deleting those that aren't making a profit, while simultaneously testing your pages. Gradually, your sales will increase and your advertising cost will decrease.
Hope this helps!

Best,

Coz
