SEOMoz still has the Beginners Guide to SEO. It was first published in 2005. They may have a new version. Check it out.

There's a really good webpage here that gives Top 10 SEO Tips (like the URL says)...

There's nothing to download or sign up for - everything is right on the page with screenshots and even a video. He has a link to a free SEO ebook too that you can sign up to get if you want it.
