They are the best for custom surveys. How many questions will the survey have?
You could also just make a text box that sends you an email with their answers....

Does surveymonkey offer a code that you can place in your WP sidebar? As far as I remember the survey is on THEIR website, not on yours. In which case you can only have a link to your survey in the sidebar... not the survey itself.

    Probably with this one:
    WordPress › WP-Polls WordPress Plugins
or using similar plugins or scripts.

I use this one if I want to get some kind of handle on what a site's readership are thinking about a particular issue...

    WordPress › WP-Polls WordPress Plugins

I wanted a poll put on my website so I asked the guys who created it if they could do it for me, as I didnt see any options for me to do it. It's a WordPress page not a blog. Well they wanted $99. to do it. That's too steep for me, so I googled and found Website Polls It's free and I had it up and running in about 5 minutes. It works fine, looks decent, does what I want.

Does $99 seem a fair amount or a gouge? I figured there had to be a way to do this myself, and there sure are a lot of choices out there. Maybe theirs would have looked vastly different but the one I got is just fine with me.

Depends on what they were doing... were they creating the plugin or just installing one that was already created? If it was for installation then it was definitely too much and they wre gouging you... If they were creating a custom plugin for your site that would be your own, then it is very reasonable... getting someone to build a wp plugin for you can get expensive.. I've had a few created for my personal use. But like someone else said, make sure you can insert the code into your blog so they don't have to leave your blog to take the poll.
