Google - different show of results throughout word? Problem!

I've been looking into targeting some keywords & optimising some websites to rank as high as possible form them but I'm a little confused about something.

Now this may seem obvious to some but I'm a bit of a newbie so bear with me.

For this example I'm going to use the keyword "Dog training" - I know, no imagination!

So I build a website & optimise it to rank as high as possible in google for the keyword "dog training"

I then type "dog training" into Google & my website ranks in first position on page one.

Now I'm in the U.K. So my question is, if someone in the U.S.A typed the same keyword into Google would my website show up in the same position?

Or would the results be completely different.

It would pose quite a problem if the results were hugely different. If I'm targeting a keyword that gets 20,000 searches a month & 15,000 of these searches are made in the U.S. But my keyword is only ranking highly in the U.K then I'm losing a huge amount of traffic.

Would like to hear peoples thoughts on this.

Thanks
