The evolution of a Forum Spammer

Remember when forum spamming used to take some effort?

Back in the day when a forum spammer used to wake up in the morning, look at themselves in the mirror and think, "I've got a big day ahead of me, lot's of hard work to do. Go get 'em tiger."

Not like today's forum spammers who are a lazy and pathetic breed. They roll out of bed at about lunch time, scratch their crotch (because they haven't actually showed since last month sometime....or was it the month before?). They head down to the local government assistance office, pick up their government assistance cheque, bitch and complain about having to actually walk down there when that lazy good for nothing government should be actually depositing their scab money directly into their account, and then wander home again. They fire up their forum spamming software, click a button, and then go pass out on the lounge room floor amidst potato chip wrappers and three week old pizza boxes that are now growing fur.

Oh how times have changed.

Now while I'm maybe tingeing on the edge of sarcasm here (hey, it keeps me amused), have you noticed how bad forum spamming is getting lately? I don't mean in terms of volume, but in terms of content.

Forum spamming has become automated, and the "smart" software that creates "smart spam" is pretty bad.

A common method is to just read a snippet of an earlier post, and then repost it in the same thread.

But the dodgiest one I saw was this morning in my forum:

The spam post was masquerading as a bug report, reporting bugs in two features that my product doesn't even support.

One of them was about stock control not counting correctly when a sale is made. Obviously a feature of a physical cart. Not one that my software needs.

I'm sure the spammer thinks he's a genius by coming up with such a brilliant piece of spam, but seriously? Let's forget the fact that forum spammers have psychological issues, and let's pretend for a second that they're real people. Who would possibly think that posting potentially damaging fake bug reports in a company's forum is a good idea?

Is it just my imagination, or have the proud people we know as Forum Spammers lost their way?

cheers
Sam

PS. Yes, I'm taking the piss, and I don't take this as seriously as you may gather from my post. I think forum spammers are the bane of society, but it's nothing the "Delete" button can't fix. But it's interesting to see how the spamming industry is changing as they try and automate their activities, and use "intelligent" software to do it. Unfortunately the people using it aren't intelligent enough to realise their intelligent software is about as smart as a cricket bat.

To move the cabin, push button for wishing floor. If the cabin should enter more persons, each one should press a number of wishing floor. Driving is then going alphabetically by national order.

I do not agree with all you said but thank you for posting this informative article. Guess you visit my site now.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

LOL... Sam, thanks for the great laugh. I may be much newer than you to forum marketing but I totally agree and second everything you said. I get appalled when I see a lot of threads or posts that are without doubt a big SPAM.

Some of my favorites, besides those generated by software (which I must say are quite obvious), are the ones where the member initiating the thread is asking a question regarding something that they should obviously know the answer to if you go by their signature. Here is a great example which I have encountered in A LOT of forums: Is link building part of the off-page SEO? Then you look at their signature and it says something like "SEO Services." Talk about stupid, or obvious, but simply SPAMMER!!!

I figure people want to be part of a forum because there are benefits. One benefit can be links, but forum admins have a lot of tools these days such as not showing links to logged off users, or even privatizing parts of their forum.

Haha! Kevin, CDarklock, and Dan, I was going to come up with something really funny to reply to your posts, but I haven't had enough coffee this morning, so my brain is ticking over a little slow.

I'll just use my Auto Joke script instead:

"...yeah, your cabin wishing floor, yodel fish and informative article is good, but you should have seen the hat on the last one!"

*phew* Auto Joke Posting software, you've saved my dignity again!

Jenny, I know exactly what you mean!

I've seen those sorts of posts in this forum from time to time, and people gently recommend that if they need to know about a certain issue, they should buy their own ebook as listed in their signature file

I enjoyed that one, nice jab

I was looking over ban logs a few days ago and there were quite a few that tried posting over a hundred times after they had been banned. The top one so far was 426.

Great posts!...I've observed the same thing. Spammers on WF are getting worse and worse. Completely meaningless phrases (almost as bad as a politician would utter) and then a signature about some dumb MLM...one I saw here a while back was:

"Thanking you for your contribution and to make the forum better is why we are here. I agree with this comment and will return soon can be always."

Very informative and well thought out post samstephens . It's always nice to hear from someone who obviously knows this subject as well as yourself, as it's getting harder and harder to really find any sort of authority in this field anymore. I can't speak for everyone else, but I for one appreciate you taking the time to educate all of us.

3 weeks later after the post has sunk to the bottom of the forum it becomes...... (notice the sig file)

Heh, nothing at all - it's what happens AFTER you wake up is the issue...

I remember back in single-man days I used to do the 10am to 1am work (with whatever breaks I felt like in between).

Unfortuantly these days I have to stick to more normal hours. It's a shame...
