I have been wanting to get into the food niche, as it is huge and very popular. After all everybody has to eat and since the food network has been on they have made it an even more rabid market.

I have been waiting until something came along that would motivate me to get started. Well, I found that motivation in a domain name I just purchased.

foodnetworkstars.com

I can't believe that I was able to get this domain and for pretty cheap too. If you (or your wife) watch anything on the food network then you know that this domain definitely has potential.

I am sure there are a variety of ways to monetize this, all I have to do is sit down and figure out what might be the best way.

I was thinking forum because:

A. It's easy to put up and get started
B. There should be plenty of women and even men who would want to discuss the past, current and future shows.
C. I wouldn't have to work very hard once it's up and running
D. Just about anything related to the food network could be included

What do you think of the name and the idea? Any other ideas you guys might have?

Thanks,

Rick

Yes, the food niche can be quite profitable, there is lot of competition but if you find some interesting and new angle to get into it then it can work really well.

Food Network seems quite big and popular and the idea you got might work really well. The domain name you got is good and straight forward and if you manage to get it to rank right after the food network itself on Google then surely it should get you lot of traffic. One concern might be if there is any copyright issues with the domain name.

I have been planning to get into a food nice myself and I have domain name waiting to be developed foodhow.com but it seems like a big project so I have been putting it off. So I started something smaller a few weeks ago, more like a hobby or so that would go under the food niche as well MuffinBaking.com

Anyway, good luck with you project.

You might have a great idea but I don't think setting up or maintaining a forum is easy or hands off in any way. If you think you won't have to work very hard you are starting out wrong.

Expect a letter from the Food Network as soon as you develop the site. Its cheap because they're not going to let you use it.

There's nothing easy about forum management. You got spammers to deal with and moderation, etc. They're harder to monetize as well.

Personally, I'd go with a blog, but love your domain name. But it was mentioned that this is a trademark. There are 35 live Food Network and Food Network Stars trademarks listed in Tess, so you could run into some real problems with this domain

Nice domain name, but good luck keeping it. The Food Network is HUGE, there is most likely a Trademark or Copyright infringement issue with having "Food Network" in your domain name.

    Sorry to burst your bubble!

    Best,
    Shane

I'll second the comment about forums being a lot of work. You can't do it and keep it clean with just one person. The automated spamming bots, and nasty humans, really keep the pressure on.

If you just purchased the domain in the last day or two, you may be able to contact the registrar and ask if you can credit your account. I know godaddy can be forgiving on this issue.

I agree with the above. I would not have touched that domain with a 10 foot pole. Trademarks typically are available many times as they can be easily taken away from you by the trademark owner - and you won't get paid for it.

Ya you might be able to hold onto that domain while your site is fairly small. However, if it gets to be large Food Network is going to throw a fit and come after you. Either way, good luck!

The Next Food Network Star - has two trademark registrations and there is a page full of Food Network trademarks on the gov site.

Whenever you have an idea to play off the popularity of another business - you have to check to see what is trademarked. I would expect they protect those trademarks fiercely.

      Good luck.

Have you considered how you will monetize the site?

It was TESS that I checked - basic search for trademarks. Use Food Network (with a space) - that could be why you didn't find it.

By all means, if you have an attorney to ask - ask him. It's such a pain to put up a site and start getting traffic - only to receive a demand to take it down.

When I originally mentioned about a forum and it being somewhat easy, that was because my wife and I own one of the largest and oldest sites in our niche and our forum is pretty active and actually pretty easy to run because we allow those who are passionate about the subject to take care of much of the daily tasks.

As far as other monetization methods, I was considering CPA and advertising mainly.

Hold your horses on that thought Bruce! I have no idea why IMers are so quick to say, "You're going to have to give that domain name up!"

PLEASE NOTE: The Food Network does not own the phrase, "Food Network" If you check TESS, you will find all kinds of Food Networks from THE SOUTH JERSEY FOOD NETWORK, FINE FOOD NETWORK, CARIBBEAN FOOD NETWORK, and the GOOD FOOD NETWORK GARDENS, etc. Some of these were abandoned by the trademark holders, but the point is; they were all approved as valid trademarks!

These site owners probably understand their rights:
Never assume just because a name is trademarked that it means no facsimile of that name can be used.

I currently have about two dozen domain names that fall into the category.

The thing is, what the big companies are hoping is that the domain name owners just acquiesce the moment they send a C&D and not realize their rights.

I've been through enough rounds with various companies and I'm not moved just because they bark, yell or scream.

      That's your best advice!

But as far as turning that domain name over to the Food Network, that shouldn't be an option.

That's a good point about forums - I have some forums I visit that are in areas of my hobbies/interests. The forums attract interested people who have experience or curiosity in that area or topic - and there isn't the amount of flack and spam you see on make money forums where people jockey for position. I'm sure they get some of it but the attitudes are different.

It's a condition of likeness and trying to piggy back off FN's success and gimmicks.

If he monetizes it, he'll more than likely receive a C&D.

Well you know what they say "Nothing ventured, nothing gained."

The worse thing that can happen is I have to take down a site that has hopefully already made enough money to start several others.

      Um, no.

You can get sued and made to pay over any profits that were made on the site.

Actually, the worse that can happen is that they skip the C&D and just go straight to court and sue your butt, so sometimes the saying should be nothing ventured, nothing lost.
