Unless you have graphics skills I highly recommend you outsource it. There are usually plenty of offers in the WSO section and they are usually good value.

If you want to learn to do a professional job yourself you need Photoshop at the minimum (or Gimp which is a free alternative). When you have your basic design finished you can then use an ecover program to finish off the perspective and "shadow" effects.

There are plenty of free ones if you search for "ecover creator" but the best ones (as with all things) you have to pay for.

Again I really recommend you use a pro.

I hire a....*looks around*, oh wait...

If you need help creating your ecover - make sure you check out the portfolio of the designer you're looking to hire before you decide. You can also use Photoshop action scripts but unless you're well-versed in Photoshop, there's a bit of a learning curve.

Photo Shop Actions are the best.

The learning curve on using a action is 0 ZERO
You press play two times not much to learn there.

What you have to learn is the design concept that would go with any software or action you would use.

I have not seen a software (.exe program) eCover creator yet that you can do the design in, that is crop... blend...bleed...create layers... and so on.

If your going to do eCovers use a Photo Shop Action, the action is simple to use so spend your time on design concepts, the action will do its job.

I agree with Richard the photoshop action Godfather There's no learning curve in using actions themselves, but you should at least be familiar with editing the photos you'll be using in the ebook cover.

Just wanted to clarify that point!

I would outsource this part....stick to the part that you do best and let the other professionals handle the graphics.
I know this from experience because I tried to create the covers myself for my first product and I assure you it was NOT easy.
I ended up just outsourcing anway!

Well I might just not get it but I tried the Photo Shop Actions stuff and I found there was a pretty steep learning curve. Basics yea simple but you can't compare an e-cover that I can put out using that stuff vs. a professional graphics designer. It drove me nuts so I continue to outsource all my graphics. And I'm happy to do so. Frees my time up to the stuff I do well and not waste my time.

And I second the vote of confidence on Semmy. He does great work.
