All your work, lost...gone!! - What should a newbie/intermediate do to make sure their work is safe?

Hi Warriors,

Yesterday a friend of mine had a few issues with her site, error pages, sudden disconnected links, etc. At first glance it looked like her sites had been hacked but thank da Lord it wasn’t anything that serious.

This got me thinking about my own sites.

I have been working at IM for over a year so I am no newbie but there are a lot of areas I still get confused with.

One of those areas is security.

Ok, I do back-ups every so often saving the info from my computer hard drive which will help if my comp suddenly dies on me.

But…..what about all the stuff that goes on within the internet, within my sites?

I am not the most computer literate person and get confused with jargon and complicated instructions very easily so I am searching for some kind of basic security set up that I can go through to at least ensure some safety.

What steps can a newbie, (I consider myself a newbie when it comes to security), take in order to:

1. Keep hackers at bay.
2. Save their whole website. Do hosting companies do this? I am with Hostgator.
3. And any other essential information that an IMer needs to know to ensure safety within their business.

If anyone can help I would appreciate it. I need to get this thing sorted soon as my business is slowly growing and I would be devastated if I lost it all due to lack of security.

Thanks
Andy

    Hi Andy

Many hosting companies do a daily back up of websites etc to ensure you have at least a recent copy you are able to salvage.

Its worthwhile checking with your host whether they do backups or not.

As to saving other data, try using www.dropbox.com It's a free resource for a limited amount of space (though I use the paid version), and to be honest I love it, it also enables you to work between computers etc

    Regards
    Kim

    1. One of the easiest things you can do is to use strong passwords and change them periodically. A strong password is more than eight characters and contains upper and lower case letters, numbers and symbols. An app like roboform can both generate the passwords and help you remember them.

    2. Use an FTP program (I like FileZilla - it's good and it's free) to download the folders on your host containing your website to your own hard drive. That way, if your hosting gets corrupted, you can upload the folders and be back in business. YouTube has videos showing how to do this if you need them.

    3. Keeping your online business safe is like keeping your house safe. A truly dedicated thief will find a way in, and the best you can do is minimize the damage. For everyone else, you just have to be a tougher target than the next guy. The bad guys will move on, looking for easier pickings.

Store all your crucial files in a DropBox folder. That's what I do.

I back everything up from my server to my hard drive with a ftp program. Then I back everything up from my hard drive to an external hard drive and keep it unplugged except when I'm using it. (Mostly to keep it safe from getting wiped out by a lightening strike during a thunderstorm!)

I back up everything an an external drive then I copy everything
on that drive to CD once a month. Copies of the CDs are kept off site.

If you are using Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal - or anything with a database - don't forget to back that up too.

      Hi,

When I create a new wordpress blog I use the information at expertwordpress.com. They hate fantasico, as they feel it is insecure.

Then I install a database wordpress plugin, that can be set to backup the database each day and email to your email address.

    Hi,

I agree with above info. Dropbox is insane, great tool. And so simples

If you are using WP there are plugins that will automatically back everything up for you and email you the backup - set that up on a new gmail that has a stupid amount of free space.
