Google Analytic stats incorrect?

Hi,

I have a website that has consistently been getting 100+ visitors per day for about 3 months, almost strictly from article marketing, mainly from Ezine Articles.

About three weeks ago, Google Analytics said my traffic died down to about 30 per day. I assumed it was because I wasn't writing anymore articles for that site.

I checked my Analytics stats and noticed that on the same day my traffic changed from 100 to 0 for referral and 0 to 30+ for direct. My EZ stats still show a consistent 100+ daily clickthrus. I have gone to my articles and clicked the resource box to see where it takes me and everything looks fine.

Should I not worry about the stats? Is there something I'm missing?

    Lynne,

For about a year I was using both Google Analyzer and Statcounter. There was frequently a discrepancy between the two with Google usually showing much fewer visits.

I recommend adding statcounter (free at statcounter.com) or another tracking system because you shouldn't rely on just one.

I find the similar problem with my tracking as well, my stat shows consistent traffic but Google seems to fluctuate a lot!

Use the stat and analytic as reference only, just continue to build traffic and track sales...

I just made a very similar post about this topic yesterday. I have several different websites I'm working with right now, but I use WebCEO instead of Google Analytics. Functionally, both products work the same way, by placing a small script near the end of the page source code.

However, I have been having the same identical issue during the past week, with my WebCEO traffic report. I have confirmed that my cpanel traffic logs match up identically (nearly) with my ppc and other traffic generators. But WebCEO is under-reporting by at least 80%.

I really wonder what role browser security settings can have on the accuracy of these. If javascripting is disabled entirely (or even with the exception of trusted sites) I imagine they wouldn't record the visit at all. What about settings regarding loading scripts from third party sites (I think there are browsers that default to blocking cookies from third party sites - is it possible that the same is happening with javascript)?

With all the paranoia that is sold with todays security products there's no telling what kinds of on page scripting some are blocking.
