Google Analytics Lacking!

I don't know whats up with Google Analytics, but I have it set up on my site and it tells me I only have had 5 visits.

I logged into my Hostgator account and checked out my website stats. It says that I have had 73 unique visitors..

I believe Hostgator is more accurate because my affiliate network I am with says I have had around 60 people click through.

I do advertise with article marketing but even those articles have only had 30 views all together.

Anyone have similar experiences?

Thanks,
Jeff.

It depends. Google Analytics can take longer to update than scripts actually on your server.

Google analytics tracks different than your server logs. If for some reason people don't have javascript switched on or even have their anti virus software have a filter adapter in the browser, then you can bet that analytics code will not load up.

I think Norton is a big issue with analytics.

      Ok thanks guys,

I am using the 30DC its a method by a guy named Ed Dale.

And one part of the method is to look at when you have 300 hits and see if you have any conversions.

Seems like Analytics isn't as reliable.
I guess I will just stick with hostgator stats.

      Thanks,
      Jeff

Yeah, most reliable stats you'll get is from your server logs (ie. your HostGator stats).

Hey quick question, do any of you guys know how I can switch my domains from godaddy to hostgator? I mean so I can use the cpanel and everything? I searched google and only found out how to change the name servers and add an add on domain.

I have the baby plan with hostgator or whatever its called that gives you unlimited domain hosting. Could someone point me to a guide or help me out?

So far I can't find a way with the ultimate Google...

I'm not sure what you mean? There really is no advantage to having your domains with HostGator.

Let us know what you're trying to do, maybe we can help.

I'm thinking that maybe you are trying to associate multiple domains with your hosting account, which is not allowed with the Baby plan. Last time I checked the Baby plan is limited to only one domain.

1.) Login to CPanel at Hostgator account, and they'll be a button / menu somewhere in there allowing you to manage your domains. Go there, and add a domain.

2.) Once domain is added, it should give you a couple nameservers (NSXXX.HOSTGATOR.COM, etc.). Login to GoDaddy, manage your domain, and in the middle of the screen somewhere, there's an area allowing you to specify custom name servers. Enter HostGator's in there.

    3.) You're done! :-)

I can't remember which plan it is it's either the baby or the hatchling.

      I already changed the nameservers.
Can I now access my domains I bought with godaddy through my Cpanel on Hostgator?

Nope. Domain registration and web hosting are two completely different things. You can't control your domain details through HostGator.

If you changed the nameservers already, then the domain is now pointing to HostGator servers. Just add the domain via Cpanel, and it should resolve to your HostGator account just fine.

I see what you're trying to do now.

Once you point the nameservers and add the domain into your account, as stated above, you can just visit your Cpanel by typing:

        domain.com/cpanel

This will work, however it may take a little bit to propagate, so be patient.

I understand what you mean with google analytics taking longer to reflect whats happening in reality but I would continue using it as you are along with other tracking software.

If your using wordpress try out the wassup plugin for real time tracking. You could then utilise this combined with your server scripts and analytics to get a better picture of whats happening.

I am using Wordpress Direct with my website, and Google Analytics worked for about 3 days.. Then the results never updated. I checked my website and it has the right code and everything.

Thanks for the help with the domain and hosting question.

I think I will just use the server logs for website stats.

      Thank you everyone,
      Jeff

P.S. I have been ghosting forums all across the internet for about 4 years (since I was 13) and this is the first forum I have ever found as responsive and helpful as this one is. Again thank you everyone!

AwStats and the other stats programs provided through your control panel take the data directly from the (Apache) access logs so will be pretty much 100% accurate. Plus (assuming your host haven't disabled it) you can update AwStats whenever you'd like (thus meaning it is kind of real-time).

Whereas Analytics isn't real-time, and as mentioned above will only work if people have Javascript and if you copy the code correctly to your pages.

So in short, Analytics is good but AwStats and the ones that are predicated on the Apache access logs are pretty much spot on

Wordpress Direct installs the Google Analytics code for you all you have to do is supply the code for tracking and it installs it.

      Thanks for everything everyone,
      Jeff

You need to remember that Google analytics is tracking software not really log stats.

Most of your stats in your server like Awstats will log bots and everything.

These will not do goals or provide any traffic metrics so relying on them is really only good for seeing general overall stats.

The beauty of analytics is it will do exactly what your mentor said and track conversions that your server software wont do.
