Twitter Marketing Without Turning People Off

I added a lot of people in the categories that I'm doing affiliate marketing in -- to, I hoped, get targeted traffic -- but nope.. instead of buying they stop following me lol.

Do you guys use twitter to make money, and if you do how?

    Another "twitter marketing" thread.

Do you engage in "party marketing" where your friend invites you to his house so you can pass out business cards to his friends?

Do you engage in "public marketing" handing out flyers to passers by on the street?

This is what twitter marketing is to most people. Find followers, spam, repeat.

    It doesn't work.

Use twitter to build real relationships with people. Spamming them affiliate links will never work.

Brad is on the money Renaisscance, and as an aside the best way to make money when tweeting is to forget about making money when starting out. Put the affiliate links away for a while. Develop the reputation as a content provider and your following will grow steadily.

Follow one person at a time. Chat with them or RT their stuff, do this with every single person until you are in the thousands. Each impression is what counts.

The @replies and RTs are the power actions of the successful tweeter. It shows that you view followers as people and not just numbers.

Tweet content. Affiliate links carry zero value until you tweet valuable articles on your niche.

I use Twitter so people get to know about ME and what I'm doing!

Like Brad says build relationships with people, Get them interested in YOU!

It's all about Social networking on twitter, Your not aiming to get sales from there spamming them with your affiliate links, Your aiming to build friendships! and get people interested.

Obviously maybe an affiliate link now and again when something good pops up, But would you stay on someones list who bombards you with spam?

"Develop the reputation as a content provider and your following will grow steadily." <--- yeah exactly -- and that's what I'm doing now. I'm not going to get friends on twitter... I'm going to ****ing BOMB them with good, free, articles - until they can't do anything but trust that I know my stuff. And if they don't - their loss (...too, lol).

okay I get the "build a relationship" stuff, but the thing is I
I'm desperate to get my first sale ever - and, also, I'm not that interested in talking to people on twitter. Or... at all. I hate talking to people on the internet - if they don't interest me, that is.

"Chat with them" <--- do you mean send pms? that's going to take, literally, years.

      Interesting.

Building a relationship on twitter is very important. You have to treat them like your family, this is a long term business that you will be building here and you can market to as long as you treat them right. All the best.

I posted this in another thread, but here it is again:

1- To get followers, forget about using auto-follow software because all you will get is other marketers who are more or less like Amway-in-your-face. Instead use automated searches related to your niche, and simply just start responding to questions and statements, like you were opening a conversation.

2- You do NOT need to sell anything. I have yet to put up a link to a clickbank page or any other affiliate offer. Instead, when I do post links in Tweets, I send them to videos or articles that are posted beside one of my sign-up forms or offers. FREE INFORMATION + CHOICE is a key strategy when I use Twitter.

3- Respond and search to a variety of topics, not just your niche. If you were at a party would you ONLY talk about your work? My Tweets are not only about poker, but also sports and team, music and artists, software and computers, Red Bull, Soup, my dogs, my daughter, funny SPAM mail I get... etc. etc. Tweet like you would "talk" at a party.

5- Follow people and tweet them at the same time. The way to get followers is to say hi, and agree with them about something THEY said. (Just like you would at a social event). Do NOT DM them, that is useless on Twitter because DM's are full of SPAM. Eg. I have a search for Full Tilt Poker. So if someone uses that term in a tweet, I can respond by saying something like, "Great job in the tournament. Congrats. Brian have you tried the Midnight Madness tournament?" 9 out of 10 times, they will follow you back and ENGAGE you at the same time.

6- Slow is good. This may sound like a slow process to you but it really isn't. You would be doing the same thing in sales job, or as a business owner. People take you more seriously, and think you are more friendly this way. Once you build a base, others will start following you.

7- QUALITY FOLLOWERS. Forget about following those massive Twitter users (sadly they are mostly IMers). They suck and never respond to you anyway. You are just a Twitter digit to them. The QUALITY FOLLOWERS have less than 200 followers, and the BESTEST BEST have only 50 or so!!!! Yeah. That's because they are using Twitter for its social aspect entirely, and they are NOT marketing. They are also MUCH, MUCH, MUCH more likely to respond to your Tweets because they do not use software and probably still use their original Twitter stream when online. Anybody with 1000's of followers do not watch their own stream anyway, and are trying to PUSH sell to YOU.

8- ReTweet is good for business. Have a saved search as RT@yourusername and make sure you reciprocate at a later time.

9- Do Not spew out numerous Tweets in succession or have an automated D, or automated follow. You will get nixed from many followers who gave you the benefit of the doubt to start.

10- Add your tweets to other platforms like Facebook and Google SideWiki. When I Tweet something that I have an alert set up for and re-post it to another platform, it gets picked up by Google in minutes.

11- Finally, use a third party software to manage different accounts. I have tried many, but Seesmic and Hootsuite are tops IMHO.

With what I have done so far, I can INSTANTLY send anywhere from 50 to 200 viewers to one of my pages with any given Tweet, if I write a Tweet with some humour, charm, conviction or curiosity. You can plug in your own conversion math for sign-ups and eventual sales from there.

I keep reading in this forum that Twitter is a waste of time but to me it has worth it as a communication venue where i have expanded my reach to a new audience. Twitter can work, but only if you are invited to the party because people like you and what you have to say.

        IMPORTANT:
Do NOT follow everyone that follows you. Most IM accounts will be all over you once their auto-software kicks in. Be selective by following only those users with good value ratios. For example a Twitter user following 1965 others while only having 1308 followers and has only made 28 tweets since he signed up in March is essentially a Spatterer.

A quality Twitter account will have 225 followers, follows 188 and has tweeted 1,485 times over the last 2 years. In fact, such an account is GOLDEN to you.

I am with Micheal on this one, it sounds like you are getting into internet marketing, because that way you won't have to "talk" to people, on twitter or otherwise. That isn't a reality, in my opinion especially if you are dealing with social platforms like Twitter and Facebook. It is called "Social Media" for a reason.

I use Twitter mainly as a syndication method for content like many people here have already described. The messages are too short to build trust and connection so I take them from Twitter to suggested content, image, videos, and to Facebook where I have more space to work with.

1 - Until you are a person Renaisscance, people will have a problem handing money over to you. They don't buy from someone who they don't trust. Content creation is key but unless folks link your articles with a real live person who engages them, you are going to have a difficult time with this gig.

2 - If desperate to get a sale you will engage in silly practices to get the sale because you are desperate. Force negates. Your desperation will turn people off since you will tend to spam or try to force them to buy. No Good.

3 - Use the @reply button. Ask people questions relative to your niche. Chat with them. Be nice, be friendly, be engaging. Enjoy the process and money flows to you with less effort. When people like you, they tend to trust you and trust opens doors which distrust closed.

The question to ask yourself is: "Would I want to buy from someone who's desperate, who just wants my money and doesn't want to bother with talking to me?" Even if you really wanted a product you would likely move on to the next person who was pleasant and had the mindset of a successful person.

Churn out those articles, keep hitting the RT button and engage if you plan to be a successful tweeter.

        Good advice here.

Be a good "Twitizen" is a good principle to live by.

Contribute -- and share information and goodies, and share your own info to...

I do send them to squeeze pages for free stuff quite a bit, but also sometimes to free downloads without any optin, and to articles, mine and other people's.

And interact, via questions, retweets, and responses.

Keeping up with what's going on can get challenging of course as your account grows. Though I always check if anyone responded or addressed my by @myname and/or retweeted something -- and respond.

I'm wondering thoug... should I start a new account every time my account grows beyond a couple of thousand, to have one that remains relatively manageable? Does anyone have any ideas on that one?

        Thanks.

        • Don't think of Twitter as a sales platform. Think of it as a relationship or engagement platform. Make sure to only target followers in your area of interest. You can do this by focusing your search terms accurately either using Twitter's advanced search feature or using a semi-automation tool/service of your choice. Make sure to offer your followers content of high value to build trust. Search for users talking about topics within your area of expertise and engage with them. Once you build a good relationship with your followers, they will listen to you. At that point, you may be in a position to recommend them any offers that may be relevant to them.

Simple strategy would be to link to good ARTICLE content and then grab their attention on your domain. Straight linking to affiliate links will get you unfollowed!!! Use your own blog as a lead generation tool.

Don't hit people over the head with your sales message in Twitter. Provide a useful tip or piece in interesting info and then include a link with more info. Basically use your tip to get people interested, then use the link to your website where you have more information to close the deal.

Depends on how you define "Twitter marketing".

It could be tweeting to your own followers, generating backlinks, getting re-tweets, or what I do, purchasing sponsored Tweets.

I simply find personalities who have a large following in my markets and then purchase a sponsored Tweet, either by sending them a personal message or using one of the several Twitter advertising networks out there.

This way, you can focus on building your own Twitter list as well as getting some of the instant benefits of tweeting out to a followers list that has a good relationship with the Twitter account owner.

Marketing on twitter doesn't work. Like people have said above, you should be looking at building relationships with your followers.

I use twitter mainly for blog traffic which works but people first have to find your tweets interesting and informative.

The only affiliate link should be in your profile and a domain name in your profile background graphic.

All tweets should be real and useful from you or your business. If you dont have anything to say then you should use adwords.
