Windows 7 problems - where to start?

As I begin to research my new computer problems, much of it seems to be windows 7 problems.

dll file problems, imcompatabilities, some software works one time then the next can't get logged in, system service exceptions, crashes with blue screens, Registry needs fixed now, etc.

It may not have been too big of a problem, but I had a lot to transfer over from my previous computer backup.

My brother got a laptop and has no complaints, but he has not added software or hardware.

So I suppose my biggest complaints would have happened with any new computer. Right now, I am really disliking Windows 7.

Any suggestions as to where to start?

Transferring a backup from a previous Windows XP computer?

First off, Windows 7 Home Edition does not come with the emulator software which emulates Windows XP, you need either the Professional version of 7 or Ultimate.

I have now built nearly 30 computers this year which all have Windows 7 and from what I can tell, most of the problems are from the companies who design the software and have not properly updated to keep with the market. Very few problems though other then the occasional outdated printer or software which has not been updated by the manufacturer.

If you have at least the Pro version of Windows 7 you can right click any .exe icon for a program and "troubleshoot compatibility" which in most cases will solve your issues. (even shortcuts as they lead to the exe within your program files folder)

Unfortunately with the transfer of an old backup from a previous computer a lot of the dll issues could be from the files either getting dropped in the transfer, deleted by anti virus scans while they sat on your old hard drive, or are present but in the wrong place for Windows 7 to use them.

All hardware and software needs to be freshly installed on all new machines running Windows 7, only storage files can be transferred like your pictures movies documents music etc.

I have never trusted the Microsoft Transfer tools to properly setup a new machine from one operating system to another simply because there are thousands of things which can go wrong. Manual transfer of storage files and fresh installs on over 30 machines and haven't hardly had a problem with a few exceptions for the issues I mentioned above.

How did you use the backup to transfer? Is it possible to take back this new computer and get one with Windows 7 Professional at least? Was it the transfer tool that installed your programs on the new machine or did you install them manually?

Thanks very much for the info. I have the home edition., so will need to upgrade.
I need to get this fixed and get back to business. It is impossible to do anything but surf the way my computer is acting.

By the way, it won't even do a download of the latest adobe reader. it says the Data1.cab file is corrupted when I try to download this. There was some complaint about AVG as well.

    Hi,

Windows 7 is a 64 bit windows and most of older apps are 32 bit OS compatible. So, you have been facing the issue for two reasons:

one: you have restored backup which has caused problems to Windows 7 integrity.
two: you are trying to run old 32 bit programs on Windows 7.

I would recommend you to install fresh copy of Windows 7 and check whether your software are 64 bit windows compatible? if not, contact vendor to get updates for Windows 7. and then you should restore just your data and nothing else.

One last thing, do check whether your backup is not infected by some virus or spyware which might be causing problems.
