Legalities for a Launch and Membership site-- How do I keep myself from being screwed by the IRS?

I am about to launch a membership product. It's going to involve some affiliates sending for me. I do not currently have a registered business or anything, and I don't want to end up in big trouble later over taxes and such. What do I need to do to make my membership site (starting with this initial launch) legal? Do I need to register as a business owner or something before I start making any money? What else do I need to do to make everything legal so I don't get screwed later? Up until now any money I've made with my marketing endeavors has been less than what I've spent on it, but I'm planning on making some good cash with this launch so that will not be the case this year.

I've seen Mike Filsaime's affiliate service where you can have them all sign something that makes them responsible for their own taxes, which I will certainly be using. But what else do I need?

Hire an accountant and set up a proper company. Get banking set up etc. It's not that expensive.

Would you take a road trip with no gas, insurance or brakes?
