Refund request - what would you do?

A guy bought a copy of my course today through one of my Clickbank affiliates. When he signed up for my newsletter, he saw on my confirmation page that I offer a discount on the course to my subscribers, so he wants me to refund the difference. Understandable, in my opinion, and I don't mind doing that, in theory.

Thing is, I only make $39.93 when a CB affiliate makes a sale, and the refund this guy would get is $33.95, leaving me $5.98.

Keeping customers happy is important to me, but I wondered if those more experienced in selling info products have any ideas for me on how to handle this. I suppose job #1 would be to get that discount off my confirmation page.

People automatically get added to a "course buyers" list when they purchase the course, but they may not realize it and therefore sign up for my newsletter again using the form on my home page. This gets a little confusing for me handling my different lists, so it's probably worse for my customers.

Input is welcome - thanks!

Refund him/her - Getting them as a lead even if you make very little on this sale is worth more than the sale in many cases.

@ Jeremy - agreed - @Laura and consider removing the ref. on your confirmation page of the discount for the future. Create value with a long term relationship - over deliver, your list will gladly purchase from you when you do this.

Refund the difference because sooner or later he or she will demand it. Best to stop that in it's track before it ever gets to it. Then for heavens sake change your system around so this doesn't happen again!

BTW...I just came back from a two week vacation in the upper peninsula of Michigan and it was absolutely gorgeous. Not sure how far north you live but Lansing this year has been unbearably humid!

Thanks, guys, that is what I'll do!

@Matt - I'm in Ontonagon on the south shore of Lake Superior. Were you over this way? We didn't have much of a summer last year but this one is making up for it.

We stayed two weeks camping in Hogs Island campground which is right on the beach on lake Michigan about 7 miles east of Naubinway on HWY 2. We made it as far north as Newberry is all I'm afraid. But it was still way cool. Glad to see a UPer fighting it out in the IM arena. Keep at it!

That's a beautiful area too. Did you swim? Even Lake Superior isn't as cold as usual this summer. Although I haven't been all the way in yet!

No swimming for me. But my wife and sprouts sure got enough of it. They said it was a bit warmer than it usually is this time of year though. The coolest part was that we went down to the beach and watched firework displays from three different cities at once. The ones from beaver island were only like a couple inches tall in the sky from our vantage but Manistique and Naubinway were at least 5 inches. But way cool for sure.

Yeah, go ahead and refund it. I would put that discount offer in your lifecycle follow-up emails. Do some analysis first to determine the average number of emails a "purchaser" receives before buying and schedule the discount offer to go out after that. My experience is that those who are going to buy do so rather quickly but it could be different for your product.

    Good luck!

Better they ask you to refund the difference than refund the entire thing through ClickBank.

Personally I don't like the discount field you have under the order button.

If I don't have a code, I immediately start googling to find one. If I can't find one, I many times hesitate to buy the product thinking I'm paying more than the next guy.

So if I end up buying, I'm buying grudgingly when originally I was more than willing to become a buyer at the price offered.

Just my 2 cents, in case you're interested.

Thats a pretty interesting perspective, I was planning on creating my own product within the next few months - and didn't know which to do.

Do you make your own sales pages? And have you tried both methods?

Refund the client, since that maintains your integrity and gives opportunities for future business.

I would personally, very happily refund the difference and be grateful for the $5.98 you made and the goodwill you created both with your customer and your affiliate. If that does not sit well with you, then you additionally need to rework your sales process so it doesn't happen again in the future.

Refund him to make him happy and leave it at that. I wouldn't change anything unless it starts happening frequently. From the sounds of it, you have a special discount for people who join your newsletter which is perfectly fine. He purchased your product then joined your news letter, he just did things in the wrong order. He asked for the difference which I would absolutely give him. A happy free customer is far more valuable than an angry paying customer.

A refund of the difference will probably make this person happy and ensure you have a loyal customer for a long time or better yet if you have a quality freebie bonus that is related to the first offer and that this person hasn't seen you could do the refund and send the bonus and you will be golden in their eyes.

Give them the refund, they might be needing the money for something else. Maybe when he's ready he'll come back and buy something.

Give him a refund and then sell him something really expensive later (over and over and over again). J/K (sort of)
