How Much Do You Charge For Ads On Your Blog?

I think one of my blogs must have gotten on someone's 'list' or something. Out of the blue I've had three people contact me via my website in the past few days, inquiring about advertising on my site. They've all said that they're particularly interested in a "text link", which to me is another clue that they might all be coming from the same source. One person said they were inquiring on behalf of a client, and preferred to buy a text based ad/link for a one year term.

At any rate, I really have no idea how to respond to these people. Is there a standard rule of thumb for blog advertising rates? Right now this blog is getting 58K uniques a month, and has 180K page views. The audience is definitely a desperate, hungry crowd, but it's not in any way related to making money, if that helps.

This blog has a very specific slant, and I need to be careful not to damage my credibility by showing ads with a conflicting message. On the other hand, I don't want to automatically dismiss something that could be a new revenue stream, either.

I would be really grateful for any insights someone could share about what I need to consider when responding to these inquiries. Thanks in advance!

It depends on which page they want a link from, number of visitors, page rank etc.

One site I contacted to have an ad on top of all pages of the site told me they charge $350.00 per month. On same site $150.00 for bottom ad.

Another text link selling site the charge is $10.00/month. (They participate in textlink selling ad service.)

So it entirely depends on your site value.

With that kind of traffic I would be charging no less than $400 a month for a banner advertisement (you pick the size). If you were running a CPM network and made just $3 per CPM you'd easily cash $540 a month off that site.

A while ago on way smaller blogs of mine with 1/10 (or less) of your traffic but quite good PR - TextLinksAds used to sell spots for text links between $40-90/mo/link.

Thanks guys, that's some good advice. It's kind of a unique site within the niche, with lots of targeted traffic, so what you're telling me makes me think that to the right advertiser it might be worth more than I had assumed.

Funny thing about this site, as much traffic as it gets the home page is still only a PR2 after 3 yrs. I think I need to work on my internal linking structure, but I just haven't gotten around to it. An advertiser should be more concerned about how much targeted traffic a site gets, but this might be the incentive I need to work on that.
