Stupid question: How do you say this word...

INTERNET MARKETING

I probably should have asked this within the OFF-TOPIC forum, but I think this is the most used and mispronounced word in the internet marketing community.

Whenever I get into a business discussion with a friend, colleague or client, I hear different pronunciation of the word "NICHE".

Some say "NITCH". Others say "NEESH".

My question is, what's the right way to say it and has anyone noticed this?

Hi Ivan,

They're both right.

I have always pronounced it "NITCH". I first heard the "NEESH" pronounciation from European marketers.

The Random House Unabridged Dictionary offers "NITCH" as the 'correct' pronunciation.

Both are correct, both work.

I say NEESH - I live in the US. The dictionary always lists it as "NITCH" though. I lived in Europe for a time, I am probably influenced by that.

I am from Scotland and I say neesh and keesh.Bu then we Scots tend to have our own little language sometimes haha!

Niche is one of the words which has been adopted from the French.
(We have so many different words adopted from many Nations.)

"NICHE" when pronounced should ryhme with DISH = NISH

I pronounce it as 'Neesh' - I suppose it all depends on who is going to be hearing it, say it in such as way as they understand what you are saying.

This online dictionary has audio pronunciations.

It solved a year long debate around here on the pronunciation of Caribbean. Turns out we were both right as there are two accepted pronunciations of that as well.

I use it all the time now, why wait a year to prove I'm right! (or wrong)

that is funny Ivan, I have heard it pronounced both ways. It could depend on where you live, and the accent, I have noticed alot of the people who live in the UK pronounce it "neesh" and I am willing to bet that is correct.

I'm Canadian and say "neesh".
I felt silly after listening to a podcast recently and hearing the guy say 'nitch' so I looked it up on dictionary.com and listened to the pronunciation and thought, "Oh my gosh I must sound like an idiot."

Glad this got posted as I now feel so much better! LOL.

I'm from the US and I say "neesh".

But some have accused me of not being a "real American".

For example, most British people are surprised to learn that I'm intelligent. []

Well I'm in Aussie land and I saw nitch. But the best one I know for pronunciation is creche. Is it Cretch, creech, or crash. I give up. Its all to do with 'ch' pronunciation which is often 't' or 'k' or some other sound. So it depends on what part of the world you are from and who you first heard it from I guess.

That's so me. In my head, I always read "ezinearticles" as "ee-zine-articles" (as opposed to "ee-zeen-articles", although I know it should be "ee-zeen".

I think many might pick up on the way it's pronounced by hearing it the first time from others. Foreign or Domestic.

When I first heard the word way back when I had to look it up in a dictionary.
Said it was pronounced nich, nech (long e), and nesh.

I'm a nich guy (which allows for the T)

It's "nitch" in the US only - "neesh" in the rest of the English-speaking world (and French-speaking!)

The word comes from the French vocabulary/language and is pronounced 'Neesh'.

At the end of the day though, as long as we all know what each other are talking about - what the heck does it matter!
