Local Marketing Strategies

I'm looking for the help of small business owners offering a product of service locally...

If you had to choose just ONE strategy to market your business LOCALLY, what would that be? How would you go about it.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Yep. My wife and I have a wine and cheese shop. We've advertised in the local newspaper and several magazines, I have a website that gets updated weekly, I use Facebook, Twitter, etc., and we've had several articles written about us and have been featured on television a few times. Everything is effective, but word of mouth (by a very large margin) has been the most effective.

I remember reading about the lady that developed the "Baby Einstein" line of kids videos.

She didn't do any formal marketing. Everything was by word of mouth and reviews in parenting magazines. She sold the company to Disney for excess of thirty million.

I have friends that own local businesses. One is laptop repair and the other a carpenter.

I have shown them both the basics of adwords and they are reporting that it is working really well.

For this to work I think that it really helps if your value per customer is high. My carpenter friend quite regularly earns hundreds of pounds from just one customer so more than covers the cost of obtaining them. He only spends around £20 a month and gets loads of enquiries.

    It depends on your business.

I help a lot of local businesses and different things work for different niches.

Local radio ads are working well for some of them.

    Yellow page ads for others.

Ads in local community newspapers also working well.

    etc.... so it depends.

Optimize for the first page in the organic and business listings and have lots of testimonials and positive reviews. I had a business owner tell me emphatically that when he started asking for reviews to get better ranking in Google Places his conversions shot through the roof as well.
