How do social networking sites start?

I have been wondering this for quite some time now. In sites like Facebook where people will only join if others already use it, how do these sites start out?

    Hello,
I have a site that you can take a look at.

InternetMarketingFaces.com Meet, Greet, Social Network and Facebook Connect in the Internet Marketing World!

Social networking is really about a friend telling a friend and then going viral.

    Something new soon.

Facebook started with exclusivity. As noted in another thread, first it was only open to Harvard students, then other Ivy League schools, and then other colleges. After that, it was open to high school students (who had to have an invitation to get in). From there, they allow employees of some large companies to join in. And, after that, it was opened to everyone in 2006.

So, at least in Facebook's case, they didn't start with a wide net. They started in a niche and gradually expanded their net.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

Their expansion was probably the best thing they did in their lives! It will be really difficult for anyone to follow suit now!
