Should I Promote the Same Keyword in Multiple Posts?

I have a few really strong keywords (Market Samurai researched). I know how to optimize a post or page in Wordpress for that keyword. But there is something I'm not understanding.

So let's say I published a post on Monday that is optimized for "keyword-A." I get backlinks through blog commenting, articles, forum posts, etc. I monitor my ranking for that keyword (Market Samurai again). It shows after a few days that for "Keyword-A," I rank 25 on Google (3rd Page of Google, right?) with Monday's post url. After a 8 or 9 days, I stick at 25 for that KW for that post url, "www.mysite.com/mondays-post."

What do I do next? Do I write another blog post targeting that same keyword (Keyword-A)? If so, it means I'm now getting backlinks for this different url (www.mysite.com/next-wednesdays-post). Won't doing that dilute my site's ranking for that keyword?

The only other option would be to continue trying to hammer Monday's post with more backlinks, right? If so, what do I do about adding more content to my site?

Did this question make any sense at all?:p

Thanks!

Ken

It's a good question. Remember: search engines rank pages, not sites. I think if you have the time, it's a good idea to target the same keyword multiple times. As long as it's a keyword that has the potential to bring you lots of traffic, you probably should do that!

None of us knows the exact recipe Google uses for ranking pages. That being the case, it only makes sense to put out more than one "version" that targets a single keyword. I've occasionally managed to get 2 rankings on Page 1 that way - one from an article at EZA that targeted a keyword, and the 2nd from my own site on a page with a different article based on the same keyword. More traffic!

You have to weigh this against the fact that if it's a competitive keyword, you will have to spend that much more time getting backlinks to each instance where you target that keyword on a different URL. That's why I'd only do this for a keyword that was apt to bring me a lot of traffic - say one that gets at least 200K or 300K monthly searches (exact search).

Yes, you should write another post focused on the same keyword is the short answer.

If your site is focused on Samurai Swords then you can (and should) write lots of articles around the search term Samurai Swords. Some of those articles may rank well if the actual content is relevant to current searches, and some won't. Search is a dynamic environment.

Also some may rank poorly today but do well in 6 months time - I've certainly found that. An article that I wrote more than a year ago recently became the most read article on my site.

But having lots of articles focused around Samurai Swords will add weight to your overall domain which will, in turn, add weight to individual articles.

Also, once an article is up you're better off producing more articles on different aspects of the same subject (as long as they're good quality) than spending time re-working existing articles. The law of diminishing returns applies when you spend time on existing articles.

    Cheers,

    Martin.
