What do Internet Marketers do to stay fit???

Since i've been doing Internet Marketing for the last 1 1/2 years i've noticed that I put on around 2 stones in weight (not sure how much that is in pounds).

I got a system shock when i went clothes shopping last week and discovered almost nothing fits me anymore apart from socks. I must admit it's soooo tempting to munch something while at the PC.

Has this happened to anyone else recently?

    1. As a rule, I almost never eat while at the computer. I move my bum up to the kitchen, have a snack, drink some water, and walk back down. That limits what I munch besides, as I always eat out of a small bowl instead of bringing down a package of chips or something. Don't keep food within constant reach.

    2. I exercise five to six times a week - usually at night an hour and a half after dinner on week nights and in the morning after breakfast on weekends.

    3. Don't drink a lot of pop at the computer. I don't drink at the computer simply because of the keyboard hazard, but gaining weight is another problem.

I know it's hard to stay active because I'm on the computer all day just like every other IM'er out there. Maybe make a weekly date with the scale to make sure you're not gaining faster than you realize?

Nice... there's a way to keep off the fat!

I also do a lot of cardio on the elliptical and some weight lifting on a Hoist. And ALWAYS stretch before you start. That'll make you more flexible and energetic besides.

Right on! I hope you are staying safe. It's good to be in a highly trained unit when the s**t hits the fan. I was in the 82nd Airborne 3/325th. By the way, thanks for serving over there!

I was in the 82nd, 1987-1988. 307th Engineers. I think they became history when the 82nd transitioned to the BCT concept.

                Gym and lots of walking.

In our gym, we have these new step-climbing machines. They bring out the self-competition in me. I have to keep beating my time to climb up the CN Tower (1776 steps). I'm at 15 minutes now. Then, with my adrenaline fired up, it's time for an all-out weights workout. My motto has always been "Go heavy or go home!" so it's a fast and furious workout.

Since we live about 10-minutes brisk walk from the main station of Tennoji, we always walk there. And, having grown up in the mountains and striding since I was a wee lad, I only walk in top gear. Also, I avoid riding escalators, walking up them instead.

When we can, we go hiking. Like last summer's big trek through the Berner-Oberland of Switzerland. However, Rieko tells me I'm not allowed to plan out another killer day like I did for the first day of that trek. I thought I was going to have to carry her out, LOL.

That's cool...from '86 to 89' the 3/325th 82nd Airborne was deployed in Vicenza, Italy. It was awesome! Course I missed the Panama conflict because of that.

sure, I'm in --- but my goal will have to be 50 for starters - I can currently do 30 in less than a minute, but I'm practically dying by the time I'm done despite the fact I work out as much as I do haha

I was online/stay home dad for nearly 3 years and it started to show.

For the past month and change I've been doing a workout called Insanity. My 2pack is looking good...got another 10lbs or so before the other 4 show up. Lost 25 lbs so far though.

I made a blog about it, and made it my work. It's now getting traffic, comments, and SE ranking. Before you know it I'll be a fitness guru too. So it was win/win for me.

Beyond that I cut out sugar almost 100%, drink a ton of water, and quit doing the one supersized meal per day plus gallons of soda.

Give me a month and I could probably do 2 push ups in 101 minutes.

Seriously, though, this is one area where I still need to improve. And that's after having a wake up call about a year ago.

One thing that may help is attitude. Don't think of it as "diet" or "exercise" if those are negative words to you. Think of them as "eating better" (not perfect, better) and "movement". Just get moving! It doesn't matter what it is, any extra movement burns calories.

That may not be the ultimate solution, but it's a step in the right direction, and once momentum is on your side things will get much better.

        All the best,
        Michael

P90x is definitely a hardcore workout routine to get you into shape fast. I personally have my own workout routine. I work out 3 times a week, but a lot of times a add an extra day or 2. I do push up, crunches, pull ups and lift barbells as well. I would suggest that you start off with a little working out then increasing as time goes on. Also don't think you have to lift a lot of weights either. If you lift a little but a lot of times you will still build a lot of muscles. All the best.

I sit in front of a computer about 8 hours a day. I lost 38 pounds in about 6 months simply by eating a balanced diet of whole grain carbs (a limited number though), lots of protein, veggies and an occasional fruit here and there.

I also started exercising by doing what I enjoyed. So I started off with walking, lifting some weights, and eventually worked my way up to P90X. It's a process, you won't lose it over night. You just need to be consistent.

One thing that really helped me was establishing what Eben Pagan calls a "Personal Success Ritual" in the morning. This included my workout, eating a good breakfast, getting a shower and some quiet time before I started my day. Try this for 30 days, be as consistent as you can with it and you'll be amazed how it sets you up for success the rest of your day!

I'm 37, work from home, and still buy shirts in the Young Mens section of the clothing store. My secret? I cut out 90% of the sugar from my diet. I only have sugar now in my Coffee and really nowhere else. I also do all the cooking so I'm only using fresh ingredients from the market and I don't eat ANY junk food. That's the fast track to getting old and fat...

I also avidly do outdoor work since I'm already @ home. I built a 8'x16' trellis over the past couple of weeks which was a lot of manual labor (digging holes, concrete work for the 8' posts, etc.) If you need to keep yourself moving around, go up and down stairs a dozen times and get your blood flowing. Grab a bicycle out of the garbage, fix it, and ride it around your town.

Or get a dog. It'll want to be walked every so often forcing you to get up off your bum and take it outside. They don't wait around, you'll have 2 more stones near ya if you don't do as they request

I put on 2 1/2 stones over a couple of years once I became
more involved in Internet Marketing and having a sedentary
        lifestyle.

The weight just crept up on me and I suddenly found that
I'd become an unfit bag of blubber. I was also becoming
tired very easily and having a dose in the afternoons!

Back in February last year, I joined a local gym and have
been going there on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for
a regular workout and relaxation too.

Joining a gym is one of the best things I did as it also gets
me out of the house and meeting other humans :-)

        Dedicated to your success,

I have to admit that I eat ALOT but the good thing is I have never gained weight. In fact, I am trying to gain some weight these days (I'm only a 110 lbs )

EDIT: I play basketball for atleast 60 minutes a day everyday. No exceptions. If I am at home, I play for 60 minutes and not because I want to do exercise but because I like the game itself.

I work on computers for almost 10 years now. I never eat at the computer - that's a given. No food can touch my desk. No food around the computer. Simple rules but keep you lean.

Avoid junk food and pops. Not only at computer but at all. (Two years ago we went for a 3 weeks road trip and enters only once a fast food restaurant...)

I cook healthy food. Yes, I am doing the cooking: lots of vegetables, only natural meat, whole grain (if pasta and bread). Again no excess in anything, just good old common sense to have a balanced diet. Not afraid even of the occasional glass of wine of beer.

Add in the perpetual yard work around the house and on backyard/frontyard lawn; climbing ladder to clean the gutter etc.

And I go for Tai Chi practice a couple of times per week - not because I am in IM but because I like it

I am getting close to 60 and my weight didn't change in the last 14-15 years.

Me, I have 5 kids to keep me fit LOL.

Actually, I think what does it the most for me, is we don't drive. That's right 5 kids and we don't drive, we walk EVERYWHERE. My children are accustomed to at least one walk a day (we do our grocery shopping daily most of the time as it allows us to get out for a 20 minute walk each day). And then we take a lot of nature walks in the downtown core to feed ducks and squirrels and such.

I also do belly dancing, just waiting for the fall season to start up.

And for the most part we eat quite healthy. My children don't eat McDonalds or anything like that, and we mostly use organic fresh foods (my youngest son has a lot of allergies so it's even better for him).

I will admit though, my one and only vice is Pepsi, and I do drink about 2L of it a day. I know that's a crazy amount of calories, but I think without it I would be nothing LOL, since with that everyday and regular meals I sit at around 120lbs.

I´m 50 and still fit in the same sizes as when I graduated school. I did have a fattening run about a year ago but I knew it was going on and why and what to do to get back. In a nutshell - not eat more than my body consumes. Sounds easy can be hard to pinpoint.

One thing that helps you stop it early is weighing yourself every morning.
Also, as many others have mentioned, no - food - at - the - computer.

    My regime is
    -work mornings until lunch
-the rest of the day do active stuff, clean the house, take long walks, go to the gym, whatever, except sitting in front of a computer
-after dinner usually check mail etc

    Other things that help
Keep a strict meal timetable. Body works best with regular hours. I do 3 meals and 2 snacks.

Minimum sugar - beware of too much fruit and juice. Your mind may want it but your body does not need it.

Potion control. Do I really need all that food?

For those of you who are not exercising, I want you to know that I have degenerative hip disease in both hips. My left hip is worse and I have to usually walk with a cane or walker. (This happened because of parachuting) I also am having a lot of pain in my left knee and am pretty overweight. But...If I can do P90X, which is the extreme of the extreme workouts (though I do make some modifications), you can do something!

Don't let your body go for too long. It's not worth the health problems that come with it. It's not worth the getting sick or getting cancer or all the other lovely diseases that come with eating the Super Sized Big Mac meals daily. You have to keep your body as sharp as your mind. Wow all great tips here. Thanks everyone definitely bookmarking this thread for future reference.

We all need the reminder and additional motivation every once in a while just as with internet marketing. except for internet marketing the reminder would be checks and withdrawal lol.

Looks like I got to cut the food eating by the computer. I find myself snacking a lot by the computer. I do this most often when I'm just relaxing and taking a break reading forums or watching a movie. It's just a habit I think those that start with find it hard to end. But I guess it got to go before it gets out of control.

Also I guess as someone mentioned regular meals do help but it's hard to manage timed meals properly as it consumes a lot of work and time but better have meals than snacks all day.

Wow man 25 Lbs in 1 month. That got to be a record. Each lb if I'm not mistaken is 3000 calories which means you should have burn 75 000 Calories!

20 minutes of running at 7-9 miles/hour burns me 300+- calories that means it's equivalent of running 250*20= 5000 Minutes at 7 Miles/ Hour but I guess we do burn calories from daily activity as well.

Congrats on your progress; Please pm me your blog I have to check it out and try out some of your exercise.

      Thanks,
      Benjamin

Beyond that I cut out sugar almost 100%, drink a ton of water, and quit doing the one supersized meal per day plus gallons of soda.
Congrats that's a huge accomplishment. Never heard of P90X. I don't usually follow exercise routines just go biking, jogging, free weights but your review does look really good.

      What a great question.

When I began working at home, I put on weight.

Eventually I realized that when you have work outside the home, you get much more exercise just getting around than you realize. So it takes effort to keep the weight down.

Within the last year, I am losing, losing, losing weight while still working at home. I just made it a priority to get LOADS of exercise. All year long, I run four miles every other day, and the other days I walk 3-5 miles. In addition, in summer I swim a mile every day.

I make this high priority and enjoy being outdoors.

Good luck finding your own answer.

It's all about forming habits! Once something has become a habit, it's far easier to keep it going!

I was actually quite lucky, in terms of keeping fit, as at the age of 7 my parents put me into boxing club, mainly to keep fit...and also to keep me out of trouble! I continued to train for next 12 years. I then had a huge break from exercise and healthy habits for a number of years and finally started working out in my late 20's again. I've now been working out religiously, 5 times a week, for the last 10 years. It has now, obviously, become a habit.

It's the first thing I do every morning now...well second! Have a cup of coffee, go to the gym, showered, changed, feeling fresh and in front of my computer screen by 10am every morning!

          Cheers

I didn't think that there could be anything wrong with sugars. Even the protein from a steak is turned into glucose before the body can use it for energy.

But I have a joint that was always sore. After it got better a few times when my sugar routine was lower than usual it finally dawned on me that cutting back might be a good idea.

Down to practically nothing now and it was so easy. Even fruit juice seems too sweet for me most of the time. I just feel like I want to stay away from it.

Gym, pole dancing every week and eating right.
I don't like sweet food and I rarely snack at the computer. Mainly because if I'm focused on work I don't think about eating.
Also eating at the computer is sort of gross because you'd be messing up your keywords and mouse with greasy/dirty fingers. It also just makes you less productive in general.
I do drink a lot of soft drink though. I guess it's my way of getting sugar intake for the day. Because I rarely have any sugar outside of soft drink, I usually drink a can or two a day.
As long as you're eating good healthy food and exercising a little daily or almost daily, you should be fine. And stop snacking! 3 meals a day is enough.

That's what I've heard and read in so many places. But you still need good cardio for maintaining general good health right?

I've cut down quite a bit on my cardio honestly because I don't quite like running 20 minutes but also after reading this in quite a few places. I still do cardio but now focus mainly on weights.

Otherwise just lately sitting long hours in front of my laptop was begining seriously to effect me adversely.

For sure you're in front of the computer most of the time. Try stretching or walk once in a while. Don't eat in front of the computer because that could mean 50% of your work time is spent munching while working and that would be 1 big factor to consider. Try to schedule at least about 30minutes a day for a walk or other activities other than working.

I think it comes with disciplining ourselves too. Yes, its very tempting to eat something while we work hard on our computers. After a few hours of writing, I get hungry and loves eating whatever is in the fridge. I love carbo and it's one of my challenges. I still eat it though but in moderation. I also give myself time to exercise and walk 3-4 times a week. This helps me lose those unwanted fats.

I had the same problem, I put on like 40 pounds my first year, I have lost it all know and am in the best shape of my life.

I cut out all processed foods, all white flour and sugar, and replaced it with whole grains whole wheat and cane sugar.

Also I started walking 3 miles a day, everyday the first thing I do when I wake up is go for a 3 mile walk.

I have been trying to run it, which I am only up to a half mile running but I go a little farther each day.

I also started doing 100 push ups during the day and 100 crunches, along with some lunges and some other full body work outs.

I do it all randomly through out the day too, every hour I do 25 push ups and 25 crunches, 25 lunges, then it's back to work.

I eat a small snack, some carrots, nuts, apples, oranges anything that comes from the earth.

and repeat during the day, I never go hungry I eat plenty of snacks and get plenty of exercise

Yeah this has happened to me and I also have a offline personal training business. I am in the process of going from offline to full time online and I only work 2 days a week now.

I find that I won't even shower on some days and just had to enforce a routine on myself to get back to the basics of being a human being.

Get up, use inhaler, brush teeth use mouthwash, jump in the shower...check emails, then get coffee, back to the computer...work out 12pm mon-wen-fri-
Train clients mon-&thur from 5 to closing.

Back to the computer till sometimes 5am.

I am working on my own programs and learning materials.

We are sitting too long at our desks. I just bought another big brain unit with a huge tv monitor and a desk instead of using a laptop which allowed me to at least get to a coffee shop and work.

Gained weight real quick before I knew it.

I just recently had to put myself on a regimented schedule.

hmmm this gives me an idea for a product...

    Quickie:

Keep light weight dumbles on each side of the computer chair, and make sure to lift them up every 15 min. It gives you the required strength and builds a right apetite for weight lifting....

I lift weights 3 times a week at the gym and alternate a push routine and pull routing and it works great. I have actually been thinking about making a product with it.

P90x is the way to go...plus I do what Tony Robbin's taught me...double my intake of water - warm water instead of ice - a dash of lime in it to alkalise...

      I've heard of this before....

What is the physiological reason behind warm water vs. iced water, again?

I want to say it has something to do with your body spending the energy on making the water body-temperature instead of burning fat, but I could be wrong. Probably should've Googled it but I'm researched-out for the time being.

I wouldn't take nutritional information from a high-school educated motivational speaker. If you drink 8-8oz glasses of ice water a day, you will burn an extra 70 calories to warm the water in your belly. Cold water is also absorbed faster and therefore hydrates your body faster.

Do you have a study showing any benefits to drinking warm water?

I found this about the cold water school of thinking: at
        newton.dep.anl.gov/askasci/zoo00/zoo00094.htm.

As for the weight issue, I noticed that all my clothes were shrinking after I washed them , so instead of getting new clothes I decided to cut out all the sugar (still eat fruit and such) and all the processed foods within reason (I still like by diet Coke).

I also get up about an hour before anyone in my house and ride the exercise bike and do some exercises. I find fit tv will give me lots of variety and I can just record them and watch the ones I like when I want.

So far, I am down nearly 30 pounds. And the dryer has quit shrinking my clothes, but for some reason it has started shrinking my husband's

    My current regiment is

2.5 miles or 45 - 50 minutes of the threadmill
@15 minutes of light weights and crunches on a workout ball

At the end of July, I will probably boost that 2.5 miles up to around 3 miles in 1 hour. Or, try to do 3 miles in 45 minutes.

The goal is to stay active for 1 hour, and to have a mixed routine.

Run 2 or 3 times a week/ play tennis 2 X a week and circuit train once a week. THE biggest thing though is keeping off the biscuits/junk food. 10 hours exercise means nothing if you are munching down packets of biscuits/burgers.

I'm 63 yrs of age.... I work the computer til about 3pm... eat ... go to work at my job for 3 to 4 hrs 5days a wk.. Then when I get back from work, take my 2 dogs for a walk. First one.. then the other... One walks kinda casual the other pulls me along. Once I get back from that, the dogs and I fall down in front of the tv and watch movies and snack till 3am. Go to bed, start all over in the morning. Sat and Sun is used for the things I don't get done during the week. Kin hardly wait til I make enough money off the internet to hire a cook so I can finally eat right ( I'm a lousy cook). Excercise??? Been there, done that.. Got no skinnier.. did firm up a bit tho. Bless all you young folk out there that have the energy...don't lose it. haha

There are no magic tips or secrets to help you NOT gain weight while you're on the computer! Quite frankly, you have to set aside a time during your day when you get up and walk around, hit the gym, walk, go swimming, or even pop in a quick fitness DVD. You have to have the motivation to get up and moving, otherwise it's almost a guarantee that you'll gain weight!

-Refrain from munching at the computer, the added calories/fat/sugar/etc just adds to your system and if you don't set aside time to shed it, it'll stay with you!

-Drink plenty of water!! FUN FACT-If you drink ice cold water, you end up burning a few calories because your body has to work twice as much to warm the water in your system!!

    GOOD LUCK!

Tried something new yesterday at my gym. It's called Tabata Protocol and is used by the Japanese speed skating team. They only do this for 4 minutes. I thought "WTF? Are they pussies?" Until I did it yesterday. OMG! I felt like I'd just done a long climb.

You do all out (must be highest speed, full effort) on a bike or elliptical (can't do this on a treadmill) for 20 seconds. Then, 10 seconds rest. Repeat. They do it for 8 cycles (4 minutes).

I made it through 6 before my legs felt like lead. It is brutal. That 10 seconds is very short.
