[HELP]Federal Tax ID Receipt for my SSN?

This is probably a stupid question. A company just requested a copy of my federal tax ID receipt, I have been with them about a month. When I signed up to the company, I used my SSN.

What should I send them?

They should accept your SS# for the same purpose.

Either just give them your SSN or give them a W-9, I believe. At least this is what I always do.

  Redice - it's not a CPA network unfortunately. I am being audited by a company (not gov audit) and need to submit a federal tax id receipt.
  
  I used my SSN to sign up, nothing to do with business, just my personal SSN.
  
  Anyone know what this is called?

You can get an Employer Identification Number (EIN) online in less than five minutes.

Some companies require them and will not accept SSN's. You do not have to have employees that is just what they call it. It does give you more legal status as a business rather than just an independent contractor. It is always good to talk to an attorney about these things first.

  JMS - thanks for that post but unrelated. I just want to know what the form is called. They let me use my SSN because well... I applied with my SSN... and they accepted me.

There is no such form as a "Tax ID Receipt." They probably want a W-9.
