Best Hosting for Hi trafic

I have a site hosted with hostgator.

I also have an email list which i send out a weekly news letter. I normally tell my readers to go to my site to look a video or to comment on a blog post etc. This was all working fine until my list got big and now i have 200 - 300 people all trying to view my site in the space of a few mins , as a result my site goes offline and i get a lot of complaints.

Is there a better hosting package i can use that will cope with 500 - 1000 browsing my site at the same time??

Don't use a shared hosting for high traffic web site. Buy a VPS in hostgator. That's the safest way to manage a high traffic web site with a low budget.

The only exception to the above list would be Coolhandle. I had to run testing on Hostgator's baby plan to determine a Coolhandle hosting fault was causing eBay listings to take over 2 minutes for a page to load. Unfortunately in my case, Coolhandle has a policy that after 30 days they will not give a refund, even if you deem the fault to be with the hosting provider. Lesson learnt at a cost of $262.80 , not a happy camper.

      +1 for site5

I haven't tried their VPS yet, but their shared hosting and shared cloud hosting is great and their customer service is brilliant.

I know sites like Yoast are hosted with VPS.net.

I did compare prices a while back for VPS incase I needed to upgrade ... I found Site5 to be a bit more expensive .. but I was put off VPS.net because they had a spout of outages and bunch of complaints from unhappy customers when I last checked into it ... that was about 4 months ago I think tho

If you go with Hostgator get a fully managed plan with cpanel. $49.95
There are also some cheaper VPS hosting plans around, some are listed here, and another option you could look into is semi-dedicated plans.

If you're in the UK you should check out JustHost for unlimited bandwidth/upload/etc hosting accounts...I use them and they do good for the 10-15 domains I have on one hosting account...hit me back for my link if you're gonna sign up...way cheaper than VPS

Will a site running on a shared hosting gets down if 200-300 people accesses it simultaneously ?

    I cannot believe it...

200 - 300 people at the same time? Its time for a high end Virtual Private Server or a low end dedicated server.

That instance of the server goes down - not that the "whole" server goes down.

Lets say the server as 12 gigs of memory and a dual CPU - quad core. A lot of host will give each account X amount of memory. Once that memory and cpu time is used, their part of the server shuts down. The other sites on the server should not be affected.

      -----

I use Future Hosting for my hosting provider. I lease a quad core dedicated server with 8 gigs of memory. It seem to do pretty good. One of my sites averages around 11,000 unique ip addresses daily.

Most auto responders also let you stagger or ration the email you send out. Those with huge lists automate to send out xxxx number of emails every 1/2 hour or so.

The best ones are - Godaddy & Hostgator. Also their plans are available at cheaper rates.

Godaddy has a terrible hosting reputation. About 3 1/2 years ago my virtual private server at godaddy was hacked. When I called tech support - they said it was my problem and refused to help.

Go to webhosting talk and read through some of the godaddy hosting horror stories there.

A guy I know, his vbulletin forum was hacked 2 weeks ago, and guess what, he uses godaddy hosting.

I hope that is a joke. GoDaddy are absolutely disgraceful. They are a shockingly bad company. Their reputation is awful in professional circles and rightly so. If you are running a serious business, you shouldn't go anywhere near GoDaddy for anything...

The best way to solve this problem is to buy a VPS or a Dedicated Server.
For now a VPS it's enough.
If the list goes bigger, then upgrade to a Dedicated Server.
Buy these services from some company that has good reviews and offers good support.

hmm.... actually you should be fine with hostgator shared hosting.... unless your site is full of video contents....

if your site is just basic site that is text based, i would recommend if possible, to use wordpress with supercache plugin....

but of course vps will give you more room to breath... the first option should be more than enough.. JMHO

again if you dont already do it, vps or shared or dedicated, make sure to have your website cached... it helps alot...

You should try the new Cluster hosting from CatN Its a newer hosting company but they have their own servers and specialize in high traffic site they also have a 100% up time because your site will be hosted on more then one server in case one goes down.

The website is Cloud PHP hosting CatN

It honestly depends on the amount of resources your site is using, how many sql queries are being made etc.

Are your videos embedded videos from somewhere like Youtube?

Just because you have "high traffic" doesn't mean you need to get a VPS, regardless of what everyone above is saying. You can quickly get a VPS and realize you're having the same exact problems.

I think you need to evaluate the optimization on your site first, and figure out what's causing the lag. It could vary well be a hosting problem, but overloaded servers, not shared hosting in general.

I wouldn't jump the gun so quickly on upgrading to a VPS/Dedicated server just because everyone posting in this thread "thinks" that will be the solution.
