The "Shock" Technique

This is old,

but i probably want to realise this since i have a concrete idea. Of course i wont tell you the niche..but it will work for anything.

It's NOT really ethical

Actually, i can see devil-horns growing out of anyone's skull who does this. Nevertheless, it is VERY effective. You decide whether you want to try this out and be "really, really bad"....or rather stay "a good boy" with ethics.

Here we go:

I noticed that on DIGG and similar sites the biggest nonsense and most shocking stories get the most hits. Rumors, outrageous things!

Sometimes posts which only consist of one picture get 1000s of hits, this can be shock-pictures or really funny ones.

They key is emotions...something people see and
they need to show this to other people since its just to outrageous to believe.

What do you do?

You make up some story, you blatantly lie until you are green in the face. You write something very outrageous, maybe targeting a certain niche. You claim that you have some knowledge that "something is planned"...which is just unheard of.

You link to your blog/site where you publish the story, needles to say that the site is laced with adsense/affiliate links.

The story must be so outrageous that everyone coming across the story feels the immediate urge to bookmark this and share it to their friends.

After a few weeks, you admit to "just having made a spoof"....you play innocent and laugh. You apologize to the ones who fell for the story.

Make sure you are legally covered, so don't accuse anyone in a form that it would be very negative for a 3rd party.

You don't need to go that far, there are plenty of ideas to make a really, really outrageous story without compromising anyone.

Believe me, it works

(i once tested this on a lower scale, i made up a story about a giant cat living in chernobyl, the cat grew bigger than a horse due to radiation remains in chernobyl. Biggest cat in the world. Of course i had affiliate links on the site for cat training and similar..was fun

Another classic example of this is a pretty known older site which claimed that they sold little kittens, bonsai-kittens, which grow up in glasses with the solely use for "decoration". They made up some story that its pretty common in japan to have "bonsai kittens" in a jar at home.
You can imagine how much emotions this site stired up .) I have no idea however how the person monetized the site, i assume ads.

I actually have a very, very big "fake" story in the works that will likely get a LOT of coverage and a lot of traffic. When it goes global I'll let you all you guys in on the secret that my business partner and I are behind it.

I don't see anything unethical about this GeorgR.. As long as you do not cross that line as you suggested at the last of your post..

Really it is no different than telling children that Santa Clause or the Easter Bunny exist.. It's the same thing as a children story, that simple..

Would I attempt the above, no.. Just aint me but again I am no writer either..

Very Very old... tens of thousands of years old... so it's obviously a proven technique over time, that never loses it's effect.

Using Emotions, shock/awe always makes people do what you want them to do... kind of like sheep...

My only gripe/suggestion is that there is so much 'shock' info out there, that you don't have to lie or make it up!

True, you can't believe half of what you read, but let's not blatantly lie and saturate the world with more information that is simply not true.

We have enough lies to go through as it is... let's not tell people to add to the problem...

The 'SHOCK' value technique that the OP first brought up is the thing we should be discussing...

We surely don't need to make up stories that aren't true to envoke this emotion...

It just takes a little bit of creativity to accomplish this within your copy.
