Domain Transfer Questions

I've got a bunch of domains that I want to sell. I'm leaning toward attaching some basic sites to them, and then flipping the sites for a few bucks.

But, I'm stuck on the technical aspects of transferring domains. I've NEVER pushed/transferred (whatever the right term is) a domain to another person. Never. And I'm nervous about listing domains or sites for sale and then completely screwing up the transfer process.

I understand that it's simpler on Namecheap, and (thankfully) some of my domains are on Namecheap. I just need to make sure the buyer has a Namecheap account / profile - and then I can do a 'push' to them, right?

But (unfortunately) a lot of my domains are on Hostmonster. And if I understand Hostmonster, they are structured as subdomains? Even though I purchased top-level domains, they are structured internally as sub-domains. Not sure if I have that right, but anyway. I don't have a reseller acct with Hostmonster, so all my domains are tied in with my main one, even though they "look" like top-level domains.

When I first got started, I purchased all my domains through Hostmonster.

Anyway, regardless of that, I have no clue about transferring / pushing domains from Hostmonster to my buyer. I've watched some of the Hostmonster tutorials, but I just get confused.

Does anyone have experience with pushing/transferring domains from Hostmonster or a similar web company?

I don't know about hostmaster, but in general, this is how transferring a domain has always worked for me.

    1. The owner/seller of the domain (you) first must unlock the domain.

    2. The owner/seller (you) then obtains the "authorization code" that will allow the domain to be transferred. (Sometimes you can get this right away by clicking a button or two, and sometimes you need to request it. Just follow the instructions at your registrar.)

    3. The owner/seller (you) then sends the buyer the authorization code.

    4. The buyer then initiates the transfer with the authorization code.

    5. The seller (you) then approves the transfer request, and the domain is transferred.

That, I believe, will be the rough outline for most registrars.

Transferring a whole site is a completely different game, and there are many more technical issues you can run into, so you will want to research that in depth.
