Horror Stories About GoDaddy For Hosting & Domain Registration?

I have used GoDaddy for hosting & domain registration. I currently have about 20 domains registered and am about to launch my first few sites.

However, I have heard mixed reviews of using GoDaddy for Hosting and I have heard mixed reviews of using them for Domain registration...

The thing is most of the time I hear the reviews from people, they don't seem to elaborate and give specifics on the situation...

One claim is that they state to have heard horror stories from other IM Marketers to have their accts. suspended for ridiculous reasons.

However, I have heard other marketers state that they are good for domain registration.

And in regards to hosting, they state it doesn't have a C-Panel like other hosting accounts... However GoDaddy does have something called Hosting Connection which gives you the same exact ability to do a '1-Click install' for wordpress blogs...

...But what that being said, does it lack in anything else compared to all the other hosting accounts that have C-Panel, and does it lack for any other reasons?

So, please, give your ideas/knowledge/experiences on Domain & Hosting Accounts...And also, which ones you believe are the best & least restrictive for Affiliate/Internet Marketers.

I hope to gather enough feedback for me to switch to other accounts if GoDaddy does not fit the needs of affiliate/IM Marketing.

Thanks for your input,
Tommy

Regarding their hosting, I have no experience partly because I've only ever heard horror stories about it (but a lot of them, and from many people I trust and respect) and never anything good at all, and I decided a long time ago to keep well away from their hosting.

But perhaps even more important than this, it would clearly be a mistake to register and host in the same place anyway.
I went with Namecheap form my last domain registration....

I have heard this before, but don't really understand why. All my sites are hosted at the same site I use for domain reg. Can someone explain why this is a bad idea?

      Jacer,

I was turned off to their domain registration particularly by what at least appeared to be a very complex series of add-ons. On top of that, I felt like some of their 'add-ons' were shrouded in a bit of vagueness, although sounding like they were really important. From a strictly user experience, I was a bit turned off by it....clearly, it has been effective (and profitable) for them, although, for me personally, I literally was made to feel like I had to get everything. At that juncture, I suppose someone could either get everything or not get anything at all. I went with the second option.

Yes, I would agree that their domain reg is obnoxious. For someone new you could end up paying way too much for things that you don't need. I keep using them for domain registration because they keep sending me discount coupons. For me, the familiarity and price keeps me going back.

With GoDaddy, their interface is clunky but worse their
checkout process is multiple upsell hell.

Now, I wouldn't use GoDaddy for my domains or hosting
even if they paid me - I'm serious.

So, for domain purchases I use Namecheap or eNom and
for hosting I use my Hostgator reseller accounts.

A reseller account is where you rent so much space from
the hosting company (in my case Hostgator) and you can
then sell that space onto other people or use it yourself.

For example, I host the sites of some of my offline clients
and then charge them a monthly hosting fee separately.

I also use the reseller accounts to host my own sites and
they all have their own cpanel, etc.

You can find out more about Hostgator's reseller pacakges
              at:

Reseller Hosting Plans - Web Hosting Packages with cPanel and WHM (no affil.)

So, with their Aluminium package you can get 50GB of
disk space for just $24.95 per month and sell chunks of
it on to clients for a monthly fee that you choose.

(I find that most clients rarely exceed using 100MB of space).

So the main benefit is that you can actually make a profit
from your hosting account by selling the space onto others.

Does anyone here think that, eventually, as people become more and more familiar with the internet, that GoDaddy may actually be forced (in order to survive) to change or alter their checkout process (painful series of complex, vague, upsells)?....

I really think that it was intentionally structured to capitalize on people who may not exactly 'know' what they are doing online. With time, people may begin to ask alot of questions....

Yes, in my opinion Godaddy is BY FAR the worst option for domain registration as well as for hosting. Unless, of course, you don't use the domains/hosting for business.

The thing is most of the time I hear the reviews from people, they don't seem to elaborate and give specifics on the situation...
Yeah, I don't feel like elaborating my story either.
But trust me when I say that anyone who is using domains/hosting for *business* should avoid Godaddy like the plague.

    GoDaddy has two major problems.

First, their customer service absolutely sucks.

Second, if there are accusations made against you, they will shut you down and side with your accuser more often than not.

Now, that said: if you only use them as a domain registrar, you will probably never need their customer service, and if nobody makes accusations against you - well, no worries.

does it lack in anything else compared to all the other hosting accounts that have C-Panel,
CPanel is a requirement for some automation tools.

That said, I don't have it, and I don't care. But then, I don't use those tools.

As far as alternatives go, NameCheap and HostGator are the go-to folks for domains and hosting around here. I've used those in only a small fashion, primarily to see if they were really so much better than what I was using (GoDaddy and a dedicated server with Peer1). They're not. But they are good, so I can see why everyone uses them.

BlueHost also comes highly recommended. No experience with them.

If you get accused of spam, they will shut you down and then charge you an outrageous 'reinstatement' fee ( $200?). If you want your domain back, you will pay the fee.

I had someone I do work for that went through this because an affiliate spammed.

Never but NEVER commingle any hosting account together with your domain name registration account. Never, ever, never! Period and end of story.

Jacer, I've got to say, when it comes to godaddy, "You are an anomaly and an aberration!"

I've had to move or help move a number of people from godaddy hosting and I've yet to hear such glowing reviews from people that I know, trust and value.

Pat your self on the back and take an applause...

As far as renewing with godaddy, I've stumbled upon a sweet little strategy that keeps my renewals at pace with the registration prices of Namecheap. If I didn't have that, I'd either pony up or move to Namecheap upon renewal.

I haven't had the clunky interface experience but that freakin upsell bit is way over the top. It must work because Bob Parsons just keeps amping it up.

Overall, I would never use godaddy hosting and would recommend against any Internet Marketer from doing so for the stated reasons of many WF members.

Hosting? Host Gator. Easy to work with, and to a techno-ignoramus like me, their support has been phenomenal. The online chat support is a lifesaver. On a scale of 1 to 10, easily an 11.

GoDaddy has the best customer service in the domain business.

Their first tier email CS seems to be using flowcharts though, so that can get ugly from time to time since they wouldn't be allowed to deviate from the chart. Second tier email CS is fine. Phone support gets more training than anywhere else. You should always call them on important issues. It will definitely be resolved.

The big thing here is spam complaints. If you mail, you need to keep the necessary records to prove that you are CAN-SPAM compliant:

      Email address
      IP address
      Date & time of opt-in

People are going to make the argument whether or not registrars should police for spammers. The bottom line is that GoDaddy does and those that get burned are the amateurs who don't keep the above vital info.

As for the complaints of upsells, none of them are pre-checked. Just click through. Takes about 10 seconds. There is also an express checkout link on the bulk registration page that takes you straight to payment.

WOW! This is a HORROR story if I ever heard one.

I know it's easy to transfer a domain name... But what is the process if I want to transfer my hosting account? Is this possible? And if so, what is the process? For example, Do I have to wait till my hosting account expires? Do I have to set up my website all over again like it's brand new?

        It's easy to transfer hosting.

Just upload all your site to the new hosting account and
then simply point the domain name to the named servers
        of the new host.

As you control the domain name, you simply insert the new
DNS details for the host server.

        123.newhostnamedservers.com
        124.newhostnamedservers.com

Just make sure that your full site is uploaded to the new
hosting account before you change your name servers.

Then eventually the new details will propogate through
the Internet as the WHOIS database gets updated.

Backup your site, get another hosting account, restore your site to the new host.

Or, use the Web Hosting Manager (WHM) to transfer the site to the new server.

Change the DNS settings where you bought the domain name at. And in a few hours visitors will be re-directed to the new host.

Unless you have a large site, then moving to a new host becomes an issue. One of my sites is is over 10 gigs of data. When you start dealing with sites like that, the WHM times out.

Most of the time, host will move a couple of your sites to the new server free of charge. But they just use the WHM to move the site. That is one of the first questions I ask a host, "will you move my sites for me?" Any respectable host will move a couple of your sites for you - regardless of size.

Things like private registration and domain ownership protection cost as much as registering a domain (sometimes more) for a year on Go daddy. This is the only thing that really irks me about them, as many of these essential extras are offered for free with other providers.
I host elsewhere and only use them to register so can’t really comment on their hosting. I still use them because of familiarity.

I have been using them for about 5 sites for years and no problems EVER.
HOWEVER, they only offer one email address per domain. If you want more you buy them 100 at a time for a year at a time.
Eventually, I will dump godaddy for the minor inconveniences like this.
Site navigation is confusing at godaddy, it takes me a while to locate anything I need to periodically adjust.
I am happier with 1and1 hosting, but it also has its limitation.
I also have hostgator and so far no complaints at all.

I've been using Godaddy for 5+ years now I don't keep track but it's been a while. I think they're fantastic for domain registrations, offer competitive prices, the site nav is a little messy but come on if you're supposed to be "internet marketers" here surely navigating a web page can't be the crux of your existence They give ample time for renewals so I can plan and group a bunch at once to get a better discount, and their tech support is great they have helped me the 2 or 3 times I have needed them over the years.

Their hosting is ok but nothing stellar. If you need a dedicated server I'd look elsewhere but for a bunch of things like landing pages, small sites and blogs, etc. I find it to be just fine.

Used to register my domains with them but never again. After it expires they basically hound you to renew by spamming you constantly.

I've never used them to register domains. They have way too many upsell as well I've read some unpleasant reviews about them as you have.

I personally stick to 2 domain registrar for their pricing, integrity and Bonuses.

As for web hosting if you're looking for something recogonized there is Host Gator which I've tried previously and have been very happy. They have many reviews and a good brand name so it's hard to go wrong with that.

I recently changed to another host after closing my account at Host Gator not because of their service but because I was looking for a change to a more cheaper pricing. There are many hosts out there with reliability as well as rock bottom prices you just need to do the research and make sure you weight the risks.

Okay here's some specifics for you.

On the domain registration I don't use them anymore just because, as said above, the upsells and cross sells are way too annoying.

But on the hosting here's my experience and why I don't use them:
    • Extremely slow administration
      - Their own version of a control panel leaves you waiting around ten or fifteen minutes for a setup of WordPress or an addon domain. With a proper cPanel host I can have an entire site built inside that time.
    • Poor script support
      - Numerous times I've tried to help clients run various scripts on GoDaddy hosting only to find that there is no support for one aspect or another. The same scripts almost always run flawlessly elsewhere.
    • Slow website serving
      - Nothing complicated, they're just slow to load.
When there are other hosts around that don't make you deal with these kinds of issues there's just no reason to put up with it.

For domains, sure, if you can stay all zen whilst unchecking the various upsell boxes they're okay. But hosting is not their greatest strength.

I've used them for years and have had over 300 domains at a time with them. I hate their hosting, but I've heard that it's improved but I wouldn't use it.

As for domain registration, never had a problem and when I register something one day and decide that I made a mistake, they happily refund up to 5 days after. No one else does that I am aware of. Phone support has always been completely above and beyond satisfactory.

I imagine with some of those "horror stories", we're not getting the whole story.

    Hey guys,

For hostgator, I'm torn between the baby plan & business plan with hostgator.

There is a $5 price difference per Month for the "Business Plan" as opposed to the "Baby Plan" -- And these are the additional add-ons that the business plan offeres...Free dedicated IP, Free Private SSL, Anonymous FTP

So my question is is it worth it and are these business buy-up options good for internet marketers running niche wordpress blogs?

    In Many Thanks,

About 2 years ago, I was researching for a domain name using Godaddy search tool.. I found a good one but didn't register it immediately. Next day when I tried to register it, it was gone. Afterwards I did some research and found that GoDaddy buys seemingly profitable domain names and sells them for a profit by keeping a tab on what domain names people are looking for.

Ohh and I hate the way their hosting offers pop up when you are trying to register just a domain name. I use namecheap for search and registration now.

      This is absolutely 100% false.

Not to stir the pot here, but, I'd be interested in hearing where the poster you responded to heard about that?...and, how you know it is 100% false? It 'seems' like it would be well within their power to do so just by virtue of how their 'system' is set up....

Maybe you should do some research into how godaddy grabs up domain names and re-sells them.

godaddy seizes domain name due to incorrect email address in whois and resells it - Godaddy grabs a valuable domain name from their customer because of invalid email and profits from it. | Threadwatch.org

If you hold onto a domain name for several years, its very possible that your email address can change. This is no reason to take the domain away from someone.

This is not the first time I have heard of godaddy stealing domain name ideas, registering the domain, and then upselling for a huge profit.

Pretty much every supposed GoDaddy horror story is actually the result of webmaster ignorance. In other words, people bring these problems upon themselves.

I work extensively with domain names and I have a close eye on the domaining industry. I have seen nothing that makes me agree with your statement.

This story is very old, and the policy has long been corrected to protect domain owners. Domains with incorrect whois data are now merely suspended until the data is corrected. This is actually an ICANN rule (and one that last year they demanded greater enforcement of). Not GoDaddy's.

Furthermore, the headline is sensationalized. It leads one to believe GoDaddy employees sift through domains to grab from customers and resell at vast profits. They did profit in that case, but only through the ~$20 backorder fee. Hardly worth the bad publicity of stealing domains.

His story is difficult to follow. Obvious newbie. Seems to be confusion over how to renew. When your domains expire at GoDaddy, they pay the registry cost to renew and then get a refund from the registry if you do not renew with GoDaddy during the grace period. It sounds as though this guy saw the temporary renew date in the whois, saw that email was still getting through past expiration and didn't think he had to pay. In any event, he didn't lose the domain.

There is a lot of debate over using search queries as a source of domain ideas. A lot of debate over who is doing it and who isn't. Where it's safe to search and where it isn't. If GoDaddy is selling their queries, they aren't the only registrar or domain-related service. This is something that is so hard to prove either way.

In the above case, consider the number of customers GoDaddy has. They are by far the dominant registrar. So much so that #2 isn't even worth mentioning. Purely statistically speaking, someone within those millions and millions of customers is going to search for a couple domains and they will be taken by someone else days later. That is bound to happen. That person may then hit the forums crying foul, and starting up the conspiracy theories (which may or may not be valid).

The general rule among smart domain buyers (and this goes for using any registrar) is that after researching your name you should just buy it immediately. You might Google the name, put it through an automated appraisal site, do various keyword reports, maybe even run it by someone for their opinion, etc... There are a lot of steps here where your search query could be saved and viewed later. Again, just buy the domain if you want it.

The only domains that GoDaddy sells at huge profits are expired domains at TDNAM. The concept that they are stealing from search queries, buying the domain and listing it as a premium domain is pretty far out there. I could be wrong on this, but I don't think GoDaddy even holds a domain portfolio for resale. The existence of one does not prove these allegations though since other registrars such as Moniker/Oversee.net do have their own holdings for resale.

The never ending upsells on checkout take around 10 seconds to click through. If your ADD is that bad (j/k), use the express checkout button on the bluk registration page.

As for renewal prices, there are coupon codes posted all over the place.

This isn't entirely accurate, Alexa.....the upsells DO end...eventually (so, to say 'never-ending', isn't exactly correct...) lol Give it a day or 2....

Hmmm I strongly doubt this ... Why would Godaddy or any other domain registrar buy random domains that you have searched for in the hope that you might buy it back at a premium.

Godaddy makes their money off customers buying domains not trying to sell domains that you happen to have searched for

      I would suggest that

      1) someone has used the backorder service to aquire the domain
      2) the domain has a history, if it was newly deleted - it will be seen on millions of deleted domain scripts and bought by anyone who uses Godaddy like millions of other people

Can never understand why so many use Godaddy. I think its the 1st port of call for those registering a domain, and thus wanting to stick with them.
But lacking a Cpanel, and a cookie that seems to expire after 1 hr, makes them frustrating.

I used them when I bought my first ever domain, all went well, I didn't renew, that was that. They they proceeded to charge me $0.01 from my paypal account 3 years after the domain expired, causing my paypal account to be limited for a couple of weeks until I linked with my bank account and provided some information to prove who I was.

I now use namecheap to register all of my domains, and host my content separately with Midphase.

Godaddy were really quick and helpful when I decided to switch over to another host. They answered my questions and helped me out in no time. I was impressed.

In fact, I was so impressed I almost thought twice about switching hosts!

I've used GoDaddy my whole IM career and have never had a single problem. I have around 20 domains hosted and it has been a smooth service.

I always hear how bad GoDaddy is but I haven't been able to see it. I'm sure you will face problems with any Web Hosting company out there.

I also have used GoDaddy for several years for domains and have not had any problems. However, to say they are the best domain registrar or that they are better than some alternatives maybe going a little too far.

It's going to really matter when you have a problem with your hosting or domain that is truely going to be when it counts. And I believe that is where GoDaddy sometimes falls short and will either act not in your best interest.

I don't like their domain management panel at all. I have also read some horror stories about them. Now I use name, namecheap or moniker for domain registration

Actually Godaddy's Admin Panel is one of the best in the market ... Its so good that I require all my clients to register new domains with them.

But hey as i said i must be special
