What is a trackback and why would I do one?

INTERNET MARKETING

I have never understood what a trackback is in my WP posts. Anyone want to explain them to me? And why would I want to do one? And in return, why do I want others to do a trackback for/to my site?

Any general information on this subject would be welcome too. I just have no idea what a trackback is, so any elaboration of them would be nice.

Trackback (and pingback) are ways how blog sites "communicate" with each other.

TB - you go to a blog and read a post. Depending on the theme it may or may not reveal the TB URL, which usually looks like
example.com/post-title/trackback

You copy/paste that URL into the TB field below your posts in the Write Post subpanel... and when your post is published, the other blog is notified about your TB. If their theme is set properly, the TB will be displayed in the Comments area as... well, as trackback.

PB - with the pingback the only difference is that you have to have a link in your post's text/body to the post on the other blog. It will also appear in the comments area, as PB, displaying your anchor words for the link and a few words around it.
