Syncing two windows PCs

For college this year, I want to find a way to connect between my new netbook, and my laptop.

Both will be connected to the internet, but in the scenario where my laptop is in my dorm (where it will stay), and I'm elsewhere with my netbook, I want to be able to connect to the laptop and pull files over.

I use logmein.com occasionally, but I dont need an entire login and graphical control of the remote pc. Anyone know something that maybe just pulls up explorer and lets you browse through a remote file system and exchange files with it?

Can you leave the laptop on while you are away? If it hibernates then a solution would be difficult!

I use the Windows Remote Desktop Connection to access several of my Windows workstations remotely. I also have setup an FTP server on one of my servers and use it to get files remotely.

Thanks for the suggestions. Ive been stumbling around and think I'm going to use the combination of these two:

    Windows Live Sync

Screw live sync, dropbox is where it's at. Just keep all the files that you need between both PC's in the dropbox directory, all done. You don't even need to keep the computer at home turned on, let alone connected to the internet. Once you put them in the dropbox directory, they are automagically copied over immediately.

Or just consider using an external harddrive that you can carry with you.

I've been impressed with live sync, really smooth. Did you have problems with it?

I did try dropbox, but if I remember right, I was over the file size limit for the free option. Also I thought it was a lot more clumsy than live sync.

I've had the opposite experience, I have had much smoother operation with dropbox.

Plus, I have two windows machines, a handful of *nix boxes, and a mac, and there are a certain number of files I want to keep between them all...and dropbox supports all of them. In fact, they even give source so I can compile it myself on pretty much any damn machine I want, whether they have a package for it or not.

My concern with dropbox is that I want to be able to retrieve things that I didnt pre-plan to share. If i plan to share them I can just stick them on flash drives.

It's when I'm out and about and realize that I need something that I didn't think that I would need, that I need to be able to get it.
Yeah, that is an issue. I have several folders and files that I keep in my dropbox folder regardless of whether or not I think I am going to need them. Such as, my "school" folder is in the dropbox directory, and my "projects" folder, etc. Just a matter of habit, I suppose...
