Question About General Site vs. Niche Site

To make a long story short, I have a new twist for a website where I'll be looking for advertisers/clients.

I can take this a couple of directions:

1. I can include all types of businesses, listing different categoires, or...

2. I can make the site for a particular niche of businesses, with the only breakdown being for those offering varying services within the niche, itself.

I've often heard niches have advantages, but I'm not sure that would necessarily be true in this case.

Your thoughts, please - thanks!

The question is too vague to really lend itself to substantive answers. I've talked to a lot of people lately who don't advocate the 'general' strategy you described. They find too many choices leads to inaction, not more action. Narrow the behaviors, narrow the fields or topics and narrow the options you are giving them to select from, and that probably will result in more effective conversions.

I know what you are asking.

The only "general" web sites that work are the ones with a LOT of pages - so it then becomes its own entity housing its own niches within the main system.

You would have to construct it very carefully to preserve a tight silo structure for SEO purposes.

It takes a lot of real estate (pages) to make those types of sites successful.

Your advertisers are not going to want to post their ads on anything other than what their business relates to - once again you would have to create multiple silos (niches) and construct them carefully.

Perhaps the best way would be to create the main site and focus on one silo (niche) at a time - selling advertising as you open a new section. You can create micro niches within the silos - once again you would have to think through the construction of this site.

I get that you have thought about the advertiser part - thats the revenue but whats the main theme of the site? Is it a directory? Will it have articles and items of substance?
Just remember advertisers want to advertise on sites that have traffic. Sites with traffic are the ones that contain material for people to read, watch or listen to.

    Its a symbiotic relationship.

    Hope that helps
