Is paypal reliable?

Those of you using paypal are they trustworthy/reliable to use? Doing IM the "free" way is not working out for me..

I have found PayPal to be nothing but a spectacular experience. They did recently limit my account, but a quick fax of all the required documents and I was back on track. Just went from premier to a business account and I am looking forward to building my business with them as my payment processor.

Naturally there are some horror stories, but I believe a majority of people find them a great payment partner.

Re: Is paypal reliable?

Yes paypal is great. You can make payments without ever revealing your bank details or credit card. It's pretty much the service that stands in between you and whoever your paying to protect your private details.

I have been using Paypal for over 6 years now and have not had any problems.

Re: Is paypal reliable?

PayPal is a very important part of my own business but I certainly would not consider them "reliable" and nor should anyone.

Even if you've never had any issue with them yourself, the many hundreds of thousands of horror stories out there should make it completely clear that it could happen to you at any time.

So the moral of the story is to have a backup plan. I use PayPal all the time but I also have accounts with PayMate and Moneybookers.

So if PayPal goes on the fritz for me for any reason I just reach over to one of my other baskets of eggs.

Your income is not something to take chances with.

Great service & great, quick support - at least for those who have a business
account.

Almost a decade with Paypal, I've never had any bad experience.
For me I think Paypal is very reliable.
So far, no problem. Hopefully, in the future no problem too.

This is good to know as I've just upgraded. I also like the fact that I can get a paypal debit card and have access to cash from an ATM immediately. But I think you can get that with a premier account as well...

So watch out for people that may try to manipulate the policies. In terms of data security (credit card info...) on the other hand, I'd say its very safe.

I just read that same thread too, kind of silly of the guy to close the dispute before seeing any results though

I don't think any payment processor is reliable.. enough for being exclusive.

If you use paypal and plan to have a big product launch, have a backup provider in case they get their head up their butt again.

Same with other options. Always a good thing to have a plan B in case plan A goes south.

There are people saying that Paypal has screwed up them, of course. However, I movement a relatively large amount of money with them every month (CPA networks pay through Paypal) and have never had a single problem. :)

Re: Is paypal reliable?

As long you do not or seem to breach their policies or regulations, then PAYPAL is one of most reliable payment processor. However if they think that you have breached their policies even if you think you have not, then you are in big trouble.

I was a paypal user for not less than eight years and have quite a substantial sum of money going through from my ebay activities. However a year back eBay thought that I have breached one of their policies and suspended my account. Being a eBay company, they also suspended my account although I protested violently to them but without success. Luckily my funds were held for about 3 months before they release the balance to me.

Hello Kb24
I believes it is fairly good and reliable as there are million of people using it without a problem. However a backup plan would be great if it ever have some problem as nothing is perfect. I love how I don't really have to put in my credit information to pay online(It is a option to do so). I never have any money stolen nor taken before so it is safe.

Paypal is a blessing and great service to business
owners including myself.

They make taking payments easy as ever.

I've had my squabbles with paypal, but it was all
my fault in the first place. Customer service rocks
and the people there are beyond helpful.

I'm thinking about getting a paypal tatoo across
my right arm...just kidding.

PayPal is one convenient way for me to do Mass Payment and reduce rates when paying outsourcers. Though, that's also true Kezz. Backing up is always part of my Plan Bs so whatever weird that might happen, I will not have to worry if I'd lose some. :)

Hi,

I've been using their website payments pro system and overall I'm quite happy with it. They have their annoying problems like most companies do, such as limiting their customer service until 6pm over here in the UK.

They are well known by most people so I think this helps from a trust standpoint. I also like their virtual terminal where you can manually process credit cards for anyone who wants to pay over the phone.

Thanks.

Rich

I recommend PayPal because it's safer (they have that verified sign from VeriSign, Inc.).
They are fast at payments the fee are very reliable and the support is very great.
Most people use PayPal instead of other payment processor.

Re: Is paypal reliable?

Paypal reliable? That is the perception. Usually they are. But not always.

Like...

They had shut out their entire india operation, and had each and every single Indian professional who use Paypal, without any notice, from 27th Jan 2010 till somewhere mid-March 2010.

Why?

Because, they had not followed some circular issued by the Government of India even after getting the permission to take up to a full year to obtain some mandatory license to operate in India.

How did they react?

Most unprofessionally. They did not intimate a single Indian user beforehand, and suddenly started rolling back and refunding complete transaction where the payment was received by people in India (no matter who made the payment, and never the other way round), leading to a high chaos and a bunch of sellers who ended up selling their goods for no price (thanks to the automated rollback).

All that they did was that they made a post in their official blog much later - sometime in February 2010- informing that they are working on it.

In my mind, they lost the mindshare that they had otherwise gained in my mind during that horrible period.

Wikipedia later refered to it here: PayPal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Look at this from Wikipedia: In India, as of January 27, 2010, PayPal has no cross-border money transfer authorization. The New York Times article "India’s Central Bank Stops Some PayPal Services" Reserve Bank of India spokesman Alpana Killawalla stated, "Providers of cross-border money transfer service need prior authorization from the Reserve Bank under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, PayPal does not have our authorization."[52] PayPal is not listed in the "Certificates of Authorisation issued by the Reserve Bank of India under the Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2007 for Setting up and Operating Payment System in India

Paypal is so amazing a company !!

Sure PayPal had a couple of bumps in their performance and their ways of doing business in the past but overall it's one of the best if not "the" best payment processor to use when your getting started selling stuff online.

Plus if you're in the IM crowd you basically have to use it since about 90% of my past customers bought with PayPal.

Re: Is paypal reliable?

In my opinion and experience, if you are serious about your business online and want to process a decent amount of payments monthly ($10k+) then you should really get a decent merchant account.

Paypal don't offer any protection for digital sales and although I use them for buying cheap sites (<$1k) I always try to avoid accepting payment via Paypal for anything.

Paypal is great until it goes wrong I recently moved countries and now my account gets limited on a regular basis. Fair enough they restore it after submitting proof of address etc. however it is a pain in the butt after a while and it is so hard to argue your point as they are a law unto themselves

I've been using Paypal for a very long time now. Almost been 4 years. My experience with Paypal has been nothing but pleasant. Apart from the exorbitant fees that they charge, everything else works out just fine :)

Re: Is paypal reliable?

As others have said, Paypal is the defacto standard. However, I would also recommend alternative payment source in case something happens that take a little while to straighten out with them.

Besides the alternatives already mentioned, we also use Google checkout which has a similar fee structure to Paypal.

Long term, you are best off with a merchant account, as long as the volume you are doing makes sense.

If you are selling digital products, promoting through Clickbank can also increase your volume while staying under a PayPal umbrella.

I'm not such a big fan of paypal. I don't consider them necessarily reliable but the thing that I dislike most is their unspoken motto:

"You need Paypal. Paypal doesn't need you."
