Search results vs. Ranking

Quick question.

At what point do search results limit the ability to rank for a certain long-tail keyword? A specific number? 100k, 500k, 1mil??

Obviously, the lower the better. But is there a specific point where it becomes unrealistic to expect to rank?

Hi, are you talking about the competition level? Basically there is no limit as to how high your keyword can be ranked so long as your SEO is done properly... Beating 1 million competitions is absolutely achievable....

I agree. In fact it does not depend on the number of competitors as much as on the quality of these competitors. I have been able to rank 1st for keywords with 3 million results with very basic SEO and at the same time I had a very tough time ranking on the first page for some other keywords with less than 500,000 results...

Yes the number of competitors matters, but what you really have to look at when trying to rank for your keywords is the PageRank, number of backlinks, content & domain authority of all the sites listed on the first page.

You can't put key ranking into such simple categories. You could have 10 million results with no competition or 1 million results with really tough competition. Your best bet is to look at the front page for the keywords you want to pursue. Try to see what factors those sites are ranking for and if you cant actually beat them.

Would you rather swim with 100,000 full sharks with no teeth, or 10 hungry sharks with sharp teeth?

As stated in an earlier post, the number of competing sites (i.e., sharks) is ultimately not the important issue in ranking. The real question is the actual strength of that competition (i.e., do they have teeth?).

Tools like Market Samurai will help you determine this.
