Typical Article Writing Screw Ups

Sorry, but I have HAD IT today with these two screw ups that just WILL NOT GO AWAY!!!!

When you finish your article and do your spell-check, also do a search for the words their, there and they're and make sure you use the right one!

Secondly, search for you, your and you're and make sure you use the right one.

ARGHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!

Make it a habit, please. This will save everybody, including you, some time...and time is money!

    Hi Allen

I think it's also important to do a spell check yourself. I have sometimes made typo errors for example there's a big difference between bin, ban, ben and bun which a spellchecker will not pick up on.

I always remember seeing a front page newspaper heading about a victim of a house fire who was 'now in the buns unit of such and such hospital'!

Another common mispelling is lose and loose - I see it far too often in sales copy. Not to mention to, too and two! There's so many more, so don't always rely entirely on spellchecker.

    Best wishes

    Mary

    Thanks Mary,

    You're right...or your right...or is it...oh nevermind.

I had too many...two many? To many...

It's a shame when an article gets declined and has to go through the entire review process again just because someone didn't proof their article.

Or like Mickey said...it's worse when you PAY for it!

Sometime you'll proof it and still miss errors like this - I do it too - but you can tell those who just write and submit without even checking.

Years ago one of the print shop guys who was printing my direct mail Ads taught me to proof read from the end of what I have written, read it backwards.

He said I would catch more mistakes that way. He was right.

    Allen,

Far too many people could search until they're blue in the face and they'd never find the errors - they don't know the difference.

Edumacation just ain't what it used to be.

Personally, I don't use spell check much. I will give a once-over, but going back and re-reading/proofreading it myself is better, IMHO.

My kids don't even know how to do spell-check. I make them do it the old-fashioned way.
