    - allow owners of used cell phones to break access controls on their phones in order to switch wireless carriers.
This craziness didn't stop to amaze me since I moved to this continent... I cannot imagine a more idiotic "rule" for mobile devices. In every normal part of the world your phone is NOT tied to a carrier: it is yours, and you can have XY number of SIM cards to use it as you want. SIM cards have the carrier info, not the phone.

Oh, well, maybe in my next life we'll have it here, too

Yeah but in other countries are the phones paid for at retail cost? I know a big argument the carriers have tried using is that they are essentially eating the cost of the phones and then making you sign a two year agreement to recover the cost of the phone.

When you look at it from that perspective its easy to see why the carriers don't want you taking your phone you purchased with them (at a huge discount no less) and using them with another carrier.

And if it works the same way in other countries, ignore everything I just said lol.

In Pakistan (yes I've been there ) you buy cell phones at retail. So if you want to buy a really decent phone you are looking at around $250-300.

        So yeah you are right.

Yes you can, probably all over Europe, at least the countries I lived in you can buy the phone at retailer price, you will have to make a 1 or 2 years plan but the phone is yours and you can use it also with other sim cards.

The carries make the money back with the plan one subscribe.

I am talking about Germany Italy Swizerland and Spain.

Retail cost, maybe, but at least you can switch when the carrier sucks.

Why should AT&T improve their network when millions of iPhone users have no choice but to use them?

Unfortunately, that's not a valid argument - on their behalf (= I am not arguing with you!).

You can have a "sponsored" phone and a 2 yrs contract, nothing wrong with that. The problem comes when, for example, you travel a lot in Europe and you would have to pay roaming fees in 3-4 countries. Instead, here is what my friends do: they purchase a SIM card in all the countries where they travel often and as soon as they cross the border, they just switch to the local SIM card. The phone is still working well, at home they use their default homeland provider and everybody is happy.

Well, there are a lot of other differences that come with the GSM system used all over the world, except America and its little cousin (Canada).

Well, a side note here. Chinavasion.com has unlocked phones for under $100, they even have a droidPad, which is like an iPad only with a android OS. Something I haven't seen for sale here yet. But you can buy from www.chinavasion.com
