Has anyone had any level of success publishing books(physically) and having the big names distribute the books in their stores?

I have a friend who has published a book and distribution is a struggle for her. Big names want big cuts!

Getting a big brick and mortar store like Barnes and Noble or Borders to carry a book on their shelves is extremely difficult, even when you have the backing of a huge publishing house like Penguin or Viking. For self-published books, it's nearly impossible. I'd be surprised if you find a single author who has had any success at it.

I once bound books for selling from my own websites.
I believe I got them printed by bookmasters.com
But I got quotes from printplanet.com too.

I know this doesn't help much.
