I am keep getting the following error message when I try to log in to update the version. I had the same problem with the other site and I update the wordpress and theme version and site is working fine but for this one I can't even login to update the site. What should I do now? here is the error message:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<' in /home/isawy0/public_html/BathroomWeightScale/wp-content/plugins/wassup/lib/main.php on line 1346

I'm no techie but I had a similar problem and it looks like it may be your plugin wassup. (if that's a plugin). I contacted my hosting account and they helped me clear it right up. Sometimes when you update to the newest version your plugins are no longer compatible with the newest one.

    Good luck!

      No.

WP admin panel > Plugins > find it and click Deactivate.

You disable plug-in on the wordpress dashboard when you login as admin
I have a similiar error and some have suggested it is php version
Contact your host if the error occurs after deactivating the plug-in
If u have multiple plug-ins, try deactivating them serially to see which may be causing it

    Dear Warriors,

I am a WordPress chap from last 4 years & like to make you aware that either you deactivate the plugin coz its in error mostly or you should put that plugin to the root directory for fixing this bug again.

WordPress sometimes puts restrictions to few plugins when it comes to database up gradation. So this time better modify the plugin as per your requirement. If you want to keep that plugin for a longer time, then better reinstall through the Admin Panel or from your FTP

I was able to delete plugin files and update the WP version through my hosting control panel. I am still getting an error message which is different now than previous one:

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected '<' in /home/isawy0/public_html/BathroomWeightScale/wp-includes/default-widgets.php on line 1039

Do you have a backup of the site database? Perhaps not a good time to say that if you don't have then you should have!

If my sites get into this state, I delete them. The whole lot. I uninstall via cpanel, re-add the domain, reinstall wordpress, reinstall the theme, import the database and theme settings.

I know Istvan disagrees with me on that.

I think you should head on over to the Wordpress support forum and see if someone can help you. WordPress › Support

Did you add/change a widget before the problem started? It sounds as if a closing > has been omitted somewhere and it has confused the whole site.

Hmmm... If it is a database injection hack - then I definitely disagree
Because reimporting the hacked database wouldn't help you.

If it was another type of hack, e.g. iframe hack, then uploading clean WP files might help.

But I would (I hope) have a backup of the database that pre-dated the hack

............... rushes off to ensure database backups are up to date!

I also pay my web host for a weekly off site backup.

.........which leads to another thought for the OP. Have you contacted your web host to see if they have a backup you could restore from?
