Seeking Advice on WP Blog Translation

Hi,

I've been reading about putting translations on a WP blog but am still confused .

What I would like to do is put a row of flags for translation into different languages underneath the top menu bar of my blog.

I have had a play with the Global Translator Plugin and while that seems to work, I can't for the life of me figure out how to customise it to put the flags underneath the menu rather than in the sidebar.

I also own Incansoft Translator but have never installed it (mainly as the instructions look a bit scary).

So can anybody advise what is the best option for a WP blog and if it is the Global Translator Plugin - does anyone have advice on how to customise this to move the flags?

Also I have read about translations creating page not found errors - is one system better than another for avoiding this and does the setup affect the liklihood of getting these errors?

Thanks for your help.

My very first question would be: WHAT exactly is your goal with using machine translations?

I know a thing or two about languages and translations... and I am very skeptical about any automated translation.

All those plugins basically are using some automated translation machines (google, babelfish etc.) and those translations, usually, are bad.

The only case when I can imagine using such a machine translated text is when I see a blog with a writing system that I can't even recognize (very unlikely, though) and I would like to have a vague idea whether it is about selling shoes or philosophical treaties. Other than that - they are useless.

Now, for the technical part, i.e. editing your WP theme's template files, you have 3 options:
    1. the plugin has a paid version with full support
    2. you ask it in the specialized WP Support forum
    3. you learn which template file is displaying/containing your menu... and you learn to edit it. (Hint: look at the header.php file of your theme; that's the most likely place)
