we where discussing the traffic strategies of a popular site.

While I was doing research to see where the traffic is comming from, I came across post after post, after complaint after complaint for that spesific website.

Now the interesting thing is, that site is only an affiliate of the company against whom most customers actually have a complaint. But the site did such a good job of pre-selling and branding, that most customers think they bought from the affiliate site.

The Merchant uses forced continuity and most customers who take the free trail don't realize this (IE they receive the product for free and only pay shipping but 7 days later their CC gets charged for $39 and then again every 30 days untill they cancel)

Now short term, this affiliate doesn't have to worry. He is getting his money as soon as they buyer submits valid details and CC information. Whatever happens after that is the Merchants problem. If he want's to milk the offer and move on, no probs.

But because the merchant is using "shady" techniques and customers are complaning, it will hurt his business in the long term. Most complaints out there is agains his domain name. So if he wants to build a community (like he is currently doing) it will all be in vein because of his bad rep that was caused by the Merchant.

All that hard work to get a community going for nothing.

So be very carefull who you affiliate yourself with if you want to promote an offer in the long term.
