What Should I Choose For Wordpress?

Never used Wordpress, so whichever one I choose is going to be a huge learning curve. There have been many people on various forums all saying that Thesis is the one they recommend (among others to a lesser degree).

Would you recommend Thesis, despite the cost?

Personally I use Atahualpa - it's free and has an excellent support forum. It's totally customisable, so you can do almost anything you want with it.

If you are new to all this make it easy and use the new default theme. It does plenty of things simply and easily.

If you want to "progress" to other themes later on that;s fine. Your content will still be there

Highly Recommended.... It offers a lot of features like SEO friendly patch, auto enabled community development feature in itself, totally customizable look & feel, easy to use Google Analytics & piwik apps, Easy Layout.

These great features run down by available multi color widget inside the theme helps to choose a number of coloring options for our theme frontpage.

It also helps to add jquery & javascript lab to your theme & effective ajax effects to make your site more attractive.

It is really not so important how the blog looks after all. Many people like to use Thesis because it is easy to use and it has some inbuilt features. You can get the same features for free by installing a few plugins. You can do well online using a free Wordpress theme.

I use the free Cutline theme by Brian Gardner on many of my blogs and it works fine.

Atahualpa gives your option to build your individual theme, without getting worked up over browser compatibility issues.
You can have 4 sidebars, flexible width layout or fixed.
Custom widget areas, drop down menus, SEO Features and other things that are very useful.
And has a great support forum + the style import/export feature and improved speed.
I recommend it because i use it and does satisfy my needs.

I suggest you to use free Flexibility Theme, as it is very easy to set up, especially if you just starting out.

Thanks so much to all of you. I'd really prefer to start out with something free if possible. Perhaps a better look at the Atahualpa and some research on that will help me decide.

One of the things wanted is the ability to put two different people's adsense code in various places on it. Is that possible with Atahualpa?

ChristopherNV, there isn't really a link to put on here.

Just looking for something that is very versatile, dependable and easy enough for a non-wordpress-ever!!! beginner user to work.

I know I do want a menu with parent and child, probably static pages and blog pages, ability to make pages totally different, put ads on certain pages only, etc.

Probably about the only thing I can really do is just get it and start to play around with it before doing any backlinking.

If I decide I don't like it, how do you delete it?

A question about Atahualpa -- does it have the same seo capabilities that the paid themes have, or does it take more work to get there?

I started using Thesis when it first came out and now I use it pretty much exclusively. It is extremely flexible and contains great SEO features!

I like the free Mimbo theme. Easy to work with even for someone like me. Got it because I needed a simple, easy-to-use magazine theme. I will probably upgrade to the paid version later.

Did anybody - except kenj - take a serious look at the WP 3.0 default theme lately?

Everything that the OP put in that wishlist, is there!
