What is your Market Samurai keyword standard or guideline?

I've purchased Market Samurai. I'm getting started in affiliate marketing. I know quite a bit about IM, I did 30dc, I've gone through a lot of products in the past and got some sites high on google.

First step for me is to pick 5 or so keywords for my niche. With that, I'm researching with MS.

I'm curious to know what is YOUR keyword data requirements--Search content, SEOC, OCI, SEOT, PBR?

Something I've heard -- SEOC doesn't matter as much as Competition analysis, as long as your competitors have low BL's and PR you're ok. Do you agree/disagree?

Also, What about if youtube and wikipedia are in the top10 -- ignore or continue with keyword?

Thanks,

-Ryan

    Hi Ryan,

I use Market Samurai all the time and the main thing to look at is the search volume and the competition analysis.

Search volume will vary depending on what you need traffic for - a small site can get away with search volume of about 50+ per day - larger sites might require more traffic.

I don't really pay too much attention to a figure of SEOC - but I do look at what sort of websites are ranking on the first pages. Wikipedia and Youtube can easily be outranked with a more relevant site (depending on the niche).

I always set PBR to 15% or above.

This criteria will always change - depending on the kind of site you are planning on creating.

I plan on creating a clickbank affiliate site.

So you saying you uncheck SEOT as a criteria for your keywords?

Yup, I tend to use Search Volume rather than SEOT - SEOT is the actual traffic they estimate you will recieve based on being result #1 - I prefer knowing how much the keyword is searched for when trying to figure out if something is worth targeting.

I still look at this figure but I use the Search Volume as a filter not SEOT.

Just the way I do it though - I'm not saying it's the only way to do it.

what about PBR, what are your requirements, do you have any?

I set the PBR to 15% or above.
Ideally, I look for 80% and above.

There's no point in targeting a keyword that doesn't make sense.

Thanks- And how many keywords per niche? For small keywords like 50 searches a day, do you plan on making individual pages with some content just to get those 50 people? Or do you focus on a few, higher traffic keywords?

First, don't limit yourself to "how many keywords per niche". You choose as many keywords that you want to rank for. 50 searches a day isn't bad. I don't know how much experience you have, but I have a tip for you. When I started, I kept hearing everyone say go for "low competition keywords". So I did and I made decent money. Then I started going for high, medium keywords as well. Made more money. Don't be scared of competition. Think of it like this. I know people say 92% of users (or whatever the figure is) don't go past the 1st page. If a keyword is getting 50,000 searches a day, a good bit of traffic is rolling past that 1st page.

Edit: Sorry. Didn't answer your question about competition. I only look at the top 10 competitors. I look at the on page factors first. Keyword in title, on page, in url, etc. Then I analyze the backlinks. Just because a site has 100 backlinks doesn't mean they're quality links. I really don't care about PR. Age of the site sometimes.

Not really. If you're not on the front page you're not going to get much traffic. Ideally you want to be in the first three. These figures came from AOL several years ago (they were using Google Search) but I imagine the situation is pretty much the same now. The lion's share goes to #1 at 42%. #2 gets around 12%, #3 8.5% of clicks and then it drops off sharply to just 3% of clicks for #10 on Google.

Does that chart say 10% for Page 2? 10% of 50,000 searches is 5000. Also, I wasn't stating an opinion. This is something that I've experienced.

Market Samurai and other tools like this are not 100% accurate. I have MS and noticed it isn't spot on with the calculations, even google itself isn't 100% accurate.

I just wanted to chime in and give a little advice to use these tools more as a guide than a tell all be all 100% gadge on exactly what is going on, because it isn't that accurate from what I can tell.

Use common sense and give the rankings and calculations with a grain or two or salt.
Using as a guide MS has been really great tool.

What about long tail keywords? Is it worth it to target 50 different keywords, none of which is searched for 50 times per day?

I ask this because I have a site of scientist biographies, and I'm wondering whether I should invest the money to fill it with quality content.

Only you can answer that question. Are you just targeting general traffic or "buying" traffic? Is the total search volume of those 50 keywords enough for whatever your goals are?
