Does Your Work get Stolen?

So I am in the process of setting up my webiste and my niche area. I type all my documents in word for article sites, my hosted website, and free blogs like squidoo. When people sell PDF ebooks some of them disable copy and paste.

How can I be sure people arent going to come across my site, copy and paste everything into their site and just STEAL my work? Is there a way to copy right or own my writings?

PS: I was reading the 11 page "article on site or EZA first" and on the first page some one mentioned that he went to other people's blogs, copied their work, and posted it to his free squidoo lenses, and those squidoos would have a link to his main site. So all the affiliate stuff was on the main site, not the free squidoo. But he was still taking others' writings...

I guess it's part of the game. And it probably explains why the IM world is not a "find the right product, promote it for a few days/weeks/months, get rich, retire". From the advice we get here at WF, IM is way of life, not a short path to retirement.

    I hope I'm wrong, though.

just my 2 cents. I'm looking forward to much better informed people here for their answers.

My first info product was a 2 dvd set and sold pretty well

Imagine my horror when I found one of my customers had added it to a bunch of file sharing sites!

As soon as you put something out in public chances are its going to get stolen or copied, that's just the chance you have to take

I would say make your article work for you - meaning, add an anchor text keyword rich link back to your site in your article. So if people copy/paste your article, at least you get a backlink.

With an ebook you can disable copy paste and password protect it however as for content on the web.

You can copyright your content but that won't stop people from copying it. you can however take legal action but it might be quite time intensive and costly.

I personally would occasionally search copyscape for duplicate of your content and then contact the web owners and authority for take down or a proper DMCA form. However usually I wouldn't bother unless it's really ripping off all my content.

    All the Best,
    Benjamin

I just remembered some advice I saw somewhere here at WF months ago ( probably end of 2009 ).

Don't waste time trying to stop people from stealing. You probably won't get any good results out of your efforts. Try to keep a positive attitude about. Keep building your business. Your list will follow you, and won't care about those stealing stuff from you. They might now even know, for the most part.

      Just my 2 cents.

it sounds unethical, but i "could" be shady like other IM'ers and copy people's work for my free squidoo and link my main site at the bottom.

prob won't because i have over 40 article ideas and i just started brain storming 2 days ago.

With squidoo and free blogs you have no protection, and unfortunately its going to happen. With your own website though, I know there is a way to disable copy and paste functions with javascript.

My products get stolen all the time. I don't bother trying to track down the violators, my time is worth more than that. Generally speaking, the people who would snag my stuff for free probably wouldn't pay for it in the first place.

I take the advice of one of my favorite mentors: keep moving. I'd rather concentrate on my next product.

When you put the copyright symbol on your page that copyrights it.

To copyright you can also print the work you want to copyright and mail it to yourself and let the envelope with the postmark remain sealed until you need to use it to take legal action. And if you get to court and it is proved that what you had in the envelope is the older document you will win.

Other than that, you can take you pages to an attorney who will know what to do with it, but mailing it to yourself will do it.

You don't even have to do that in the US. Since 1978 there has been no formal requirement to use the copyright mark on your works.

This is INCORRECT. It's called the "poor man's copyright" and it is a MYTH.

In the United States, your work MUST be registered in order to sue over it. You can still send a C&D because the work is, indeed, copyrighted once it is set in a fixed medium -- but you can't recover anything in the way of damages UNLESS the work is registered.

I'm surprised at how many people still believe in the envelope myth. I'm a songwriter, and remember having this conversation over twenty-five years ago with an older, more experienced writer who believed in that myth. His eyes widened in recognition of the truth when I asked

"What's to keep you from mailing an unsealed envelope to yourself? By that reasoning I could do that today, and a few years from now when someone wins a Grammy for best song, all I have to do is write down the lyrics, seal the envelope and steal their song!"

You can't prevent people from ripping off your content but you don't have to tolerate it either.

Just file a DMCA notice with their host if they steal your content. Instructions and sample DMCA here:

    Short answer: yes.

Longer answer: yes, but I find out who's "sharing" my stuff.

Longest answer: I *hate* the resignation here...yes, stuff gets shared (bad)...and, yes, sometimes that can be a *good* thing (think:viral)...but it's neither difficult nor time consuming to find the culprit (it's usually one)

In my experience, "sharing" doesn't affect bottom line...it may even increase it...but that's my experience...don't take it as gospel truth.

    Cheers,
    Steve

thanks for all the helpful info. i wouldnt want to sue anyone. all they could do is copy my writing and post it on their site. im not creating a product so im not worried. my site is for affiliate marketing.

so it would feel nice to just email the host and google adsense letting em know a clients website is hosting my stolen content. that would suffice.

You cannot just email the host. Unless you file the DMCA notice, the host will not take down the material. A DMCA is not the same as sueing but is very effective at getting copyrighted material removed.

Since you have mentioned article marketing, which means submitting your existing and future articles to article directories - it might be worth to clarify a VERY IMPORTANT thing:

Anybody can take your articles from article directories and publish it on their site, provided they keep the "toolbox". It is called syndication. It is not stealing. By offering your articles to directories, practically, you are asking for syndication

And also when we are submitting to article directories the ownership lies with the article directories. Losing your ownership is equivalent to theft.

The choice of what to do is upto you if you find out that your work has been stolen.

You can call 911 and get the FBI involved if you really want,
but then you would be a bit over paranoid.:p

If just for IM content on the net, then it is going to happen and is hard to stop. Look at the benefits, if your work gets spread then theres more chance of somebody seeing it, if it is on some other site

(assuming they include your URL too though lol)

I have had my articles stolen a number of times. It can be upsetting when you have worked so hard. The reality is that no matter how hard you try, it's out there and some people would rather steal than do real work. However, those people usually end up going no where in the end because all warriors know it takes some blood, sweat, and tears at times to make it. Concentrate on building your business...they will fade away.

You are not going to stop anyone who is committed to ripping you off... But it is not as common as you might expect... Most people online are on the up-and-up and they will not steal your stuff...

It may seem different than that, because the people who do rip us off seem to turn up every where...

Originally Posted by BPIcash View Post

You don't have to do that, nor should you think that placement on EZA is that important, because it is not...

You cannot prevent people from stealing from you... But if you want to pursue it, you can wreck havoc on the person who does...

You can send a copyright theft notice to the webmaster who stole your content, and if you do not get a response, go to his web hosting company which can be found in the whois records.

If his web hosting company is based in China, your request will be ignored... The next best shot is filing a DMCA complaint with Google...

If you want to spend the money, you can also sue, but the first three are easier... LOL

I have taken down a lot of sites using these processes. In about 70% of the cases, the offending webmaster will pull the offending content on their own... In the remaining cases, the web host will turn off the account...

I have never made it to step 3, which is filing the DMCA complaint with Google... Step 1 or Step 2 always gets the job done....

I have had tons of my articles stolen. I remember submitting an article
on a Doc sharing site and saw an article similar to one I had written.

The thief just copied and pasted it word for word and changed the resource
box. I sent the person a message saying thanks for copying my stuff, then
contacted the admin of the site.

I try to look on the bright side, on some level they like your writing and that
is why they are copying it.

There is nothing you can do about it.

You can write a very good sales page and this can convert very well for you. Some of the people who do come to your site may even copy it but not word for word.

This happens all the time. That is why there are so many products out there selling the same thing.

I don't really see why should you be so much bothered by several thieves with no honor. Yeah, sure, you could lose some sales, but think of it this way:

People come to buy from you for some reason, they read your sales pitch etc. Do you really think they'd stop in the middle and go google your product if it isn't available for free? If so, make your pitch better...

Unless you see a massive drop in sales, don't worry about it. Those dudes will eventually fail or be exposed.

As long as an article that I have written, and submitted to EZA or whatever, is reprinted correctly, with links, then I am always pleased to have it shared across the web. If, and even when, I find my work not correctly credited, then I might send an email to the site admin, or I may not. I don't spend much time looking for evidence of people stealing my work, to be honest. I find that my time is better spent moving forward whenever possible - there will always be people who want to take the easy way out, there will always be competition, dirty tricks, etc., in life, but I refuse to let them take too much of my time or get in the way of my success.

Of course, whenever I use an article from an article directory, and I frequently do post guest content on my sites, I ALWAYS give the author the proper credit (and publish their backlinks).

It's how honest we choose to be in our businesses that's most important.
