Hi,

I got an email from GetResponse.com that my
account will be deactivated because my complaint
ration was 2.1%...

This is the exact email:

--------------------------------------------------
Hello BJ,

I am writing with regards to your
GetResponse account 'scratchers'.

We are issuing a 72 h warning that your
account will be disabled, and we will be
unable to provide you with service.

The most important factor that builds the
reputation of GR's sending servers among
the ISPs is the complaint ratio (CR).
According to ISPs recommendations - an
acceptable level should not exceed 0.1%.

Overall statistics for your campaign
indicate the complaint ratio equal 2.34%.

Please copy the desired messages as well
as export your subscribers within next 72
hours. After that time the account will be
deactivated and there will be no access.

The situation is unfortunate, however, your
account activity has dictated this response.

We wish you all the best in your future
endeavours.

-------------------------------------------------

What do I do now????

I have 1600+ member list and I do NOT know
what to do...

anybody know a solution???

Broadcast to your lists and send them to an AWeber form to migrate (offer them freebies for the trouble)... it will clip the wasters anyhow so it's not a big deal, seriously.. those that don't migrate probably are using up space anyhow...

But you need to think about why your complaint rate is so terribly high, you will have the same issue with AWeber for months down the road if your complaints keep coming in.

    Peace

Sorry to hear that- did you just have one list there? How long did you have it, and how many messages did you send?

I'm just curious how long the complaint rate has to be high before something like that happens.

I agree with Jay- while you still can, send them a broadcast to try to get them to sign up to a list somewhere else, and try to figure out why people complained. Did your signup form make it clear they were going to get the type of emails you send- check things like that.

That's a crazy high complaint ratio.

Either your subject lines were misleading, over-hyped or irrelevant to the market.

The highest complaint ratio I've ever had on a broadcast was 0.15%, which was due to a dumb mistake with my email subject line.

Yeow! Maybe you're not communicating with your list often enough to remember who you are... or the other side is you're contacting them to often.

My guess is your not providing them with exactly what they want. My highest complaint ratio was when I sent out something totally unexpected. I only did it once as a test... and learned never to do that again with that list.

Anyway... you must get all your email migrated to a new service. That's already been said.

The reason you must send your list an announcement is that your emails will be coming from a different source and this could be a red flag for your subscribers. So try to be gentle when you contact your list about this move. Also be positive and don't mention all your problems with the provider. Instead make the announcement a "good" thing... as Martha Stewart would say.

Or he had a bunch of idiots on his list, since they opted in. There shouldn't have been any spam complaints (assuming he didn't add the people manually to his list). It doesn't take that many to get the % he mentioned with the size list he has.

With stats like that - even with his list size, it would mean that on average, 40+ people were tagging the message as "spam" in their webmail.

And since most people usually just *delete* unwanted mail, that says a lot no matter how you look at it.

That's a very high complaint rate.

I got an email from GetResponse.com that my
account will be deactivated because my complaint
    ration was 2.1%...
First, make sure that the email is from GetResponse and
    not a malicious fake.

Secondly, have you emailed or telephoned GetResponse
to establish the why they are blacklisting you?

The second question above is important, because if you
are doing something wrong in the opinion of one autoresponder
provider, then you can bet your sweet life that you will get
similar problems with any other(s) that you decide to utilise.

Just my initial thoughts and I hope to goodness that you get
everything sorted out. Your list is too valuable a commodity
    to lose.

    Regards,
    Jeff.

At a minimum, export your list(s) and letters ASAP.

Spend some time analyzing why your complaint ratio was so high.

    Make the necessary adjustments.

Seek out and switch to another autoresponder service provider.

    Sail on.

Some of the people on your list are already mad at you, so tread on good ground with them. Give them tons of bonus of value. Make sure you say how sorry you are and learn from your mistakes.

Another reason why it pays to use your own email system... I mean you do pay for hosting anyways so why not use your server to its full ability.. Why pay a monthly fee for an auto-responder service when you could build one yourself, run it on your own server.

    * You save monthly fees
    * You dont build someone elses brand
    * You have no downtime issues
    * You get no fake complaints

Plus many other benefits of running your own.. Now I say this for those that have subs under 50,000 When you start getting into a very high list rate that is when it pays to use someone elses server resources..

Thanks for all your comments...I will implement them.

Yes, I did contact getresponse by phone and it was for real.

I purchased aweber.com for 1 year service and hired my VA
    to save all the messages.
I also saved all my lists on CSV file.

My next goal is to ONLY put good content email w/ less
promotion emails (such as broadcast - I think i was doing that too much).

Any other tips/strategy to have a good list that won't complain?
I never sent email to anyone except my list but I want to not
tick them off...any comments on how I should do better on my future list?

I don't want to ask my list because I don't want them to know about this...

    Thank you,
    BJ

One thing that I see very little of...

Send a normal email to your list and ask them one question "How are you doing today?" A gernal email, no ads, no promotion, no sales.. Simply put you want to know how they are doping, how was their day or week, how are things going with them in their life.. and etc..

In short.. Be a friend not a marketer...

A random comment from someone on your lotto list:

I you do go with Shay's idea (and it's a good one), keep the level of marketing hype/excitement down. That's the one thing I've noticed on the list - it feels very aggressive from a marketing point of view. I'm not worried by it since I know what you're doing, but others who aren't used to it might be (which could be the source of the complaints).

      Cheers,
      Jason

Don't just send promos. I mix it up but I make sure I don't send back to back to back promos. If I send out two promotion emails then the third one is just great content without selling or promoting anything. I like doing a quick video screencast of a helpful tool send them a link to it on my blog.

As you've learned here the money isn't just in the list but in the responsive list. Especially in the IM niche. Good luck!

    Great advice guys...

One-time I was tricked into subscribing to a new autoresponder when the subject line reads "A gift for you..." or something like that. It came from a guy I know I am subscribing to. So I don't mind. And in the email, it reads something like "Click the link below to claim your gift..."

It turns out, that link is an email confirmation link ...

Anyway BJ, though sad to hear you going through all these, it's a good learning a for all of us. Honestly, my first reaction was, "What the heck did you do??" Well, I am just that kind of guy...

But anyway, I hope you get through this well. One rule that I go by with all of my list, after the confirmation email and the gift download, I send them an email introducing myself. I do that to 1 - bond with them 2 - remind them why they subscribed to me in the first place.

I believe the "Who am I" email is a crucial email to avoid complaints, build relationship and keep them longer in the mailing list. And every once in a while, I write about working on my vacation, still working while my daughter has chicken pox, my home renovation project went wrong, my birthday special promo, my anniversary plans , my wife's birthday, etc...

But mostly I send them good content, advice, tips ... and also mix and match them with promos

    Works well for me...
